2010 backfires sometimes when cold started

OK, it's only on the first start of the day, and doesn't happen every time either.

Sometimes, I gat a small backfire though (SNAP! - from the tailpipe when first starting).

Anybody else noticed this with their 2nd gen? I thought it might be bad gas, but have changed gas stations and it still happens once in a while.

This same backfire thing happens to me about 3 times a week. This backfire (or backfire sound) started when the weather turned cooler. It also feels like the high idle is really jacked up on the truck. Maybe this has something to do with the noise. Soon as I get a chance I will contact dealer to have this checked out. I guess they will have to keep it overnight, on a cold night, and hope it backfires.

Sounds like this one is going to be hard to diagnosis

Seems to be normal. Mine does it on occasion when it's cold in the morning and has been sitting. I wouldn't worry about it unless yours is more than just a "pop." If you're actually hearing a really loud backfire, then you might have an issue.

 

Some vehicles will backfire when started cold. They are running in open loop which means they are dumping lots of fuel into the cylinders. Some of the fuel ends up not burning until it gets into your exhaust, causing a backfire. I use to drive a Subaru STi before my truck and I ran a straight pipe with no cats. Whenever I started it up and drove it cold, it would backfire all the time especially during shifts. It is normal and it is not going to hurt your truck.

 

Actually were talking about post detonation. Firing during the exhaust stroke. Really normal when high amounts of fuel being dump into the engine like tacoeater said. Fuel injection "choke" when cold. If it was back firing which is considered pre detonation, would be if the engine were to fire before the compression stroke was complete, you would have an issue most likely timing related which is highly doubtful and it would happen even when warm. Post detonation afterfiring is normal.

My father in his old ass suburban(manual choke) would choke the truck coming down a hill into town and turn it off and stomp on it in town giving the 12gage shotgun sound scaring the crap out of anyone walking the street.

 

My episodes are exactly like RV7Garage explains in his post. Sometimes (not always) when you first turn the key....exactly at the moment the motor starts to fire....pop. Although my pop sounds more like it is in the engine compartment instead of in the exhaust pipe.

Does anyone think the high idle (warm up) setting for these trucks is higher than normal? Maybe Toyota decided to really dump some fuel in there to make them start right up.

 

mine pops too, it doesn't seem loud, but I wonder if its "normal" or if there is a possibility of damage down the road. I place it in the catagory of what i dont like about my truck/might not matter though.

 

exactly!!! my pop sound is coming from the engine compartment, not the tailpipe. It must be coming out the intake tube (I need to confirm). Ive got 1,300 miles on my 2010.

 

mine does it to, even after sitting for as little as 2 hours, im bringing it back and if they cant fix it 3times...i f'ing lemon law the truck. its 2010 and i have to deal with that crap? sorry its not NORMAL.

actually i wont lemon law it, ill just keep bringing it back and have them refund my extended warranty and give me a better one....did it with my GMC when it kept dropping valves (dealership/GM quality control issues, nothing i did) and it kept going back over and over and over, they fixed it and refunded my warranty and gave me a better on...im uploading a video of my truck popping...

 

the pop doesnt hurt anything or prevent the truck from starting. Theres no need to waste time at the dealer. the pop is from excess fuel that gets injected to help start the truck. equivelant to choke on a carb. Its not going to hurt anything.

 

btw its actually pretty loud with the addition of my magnaflow exhaust.

 

since its a detenoation of fuel on a cold engine it will not have any long term effects to the engine. my noise defenitely got louder when i added my exhaust telling me its post detenation.

 

Mine does it to, everything that was explained so far sounds exactly like mine but it also does it on the first start on really hot days to. i get really mad everytime it happends.

 

i mean cold engine. Normal operating temps are 190-210 degrees. an engine even at 90-100 degress is "cold"

Dont let it get to you. Most cars do it but the airbox/exhaust muffles the sound so much you cant hear it. My $40,000 GTO did it too and so did my dads vette. nothing to worry about

backfiring on start up is NOT normal, especially in 2010...1960 OK fine....not today. the catalyst in the converter can be damaged by the excess fuel (clogging) thats being ignited OR can be damaged by the percussion of the explosion. ive seen mufflers blow apart at the seams from backfiring, granted that is much more excessive but over time, you dont think this could cause an issue? im having toyota look at it, its on paper and if i ever have a problem later on, i can throw it back in their laps. Ive learned with car manufacturers and dealerships, a paper trail will make them bend like a contortionist and get you results ALOT fast.

 

Not A mechanic. But one of our new VW cars was doing the same thing.
The Timing was off. As in the engine timing.(when the pistons fire)
