I seized a couple pulleys in my Jeep mudding. Was fun driving home with no power steering.

There is clay in some areas - the red hills - and there is a type of white clay too. The black mud is sticky as hell, that's the stuff I can't get off my tires when it gets just a tad wet. No idea what it is. Come along for the trip, pick up some soil samples to test :D

Its just a pain if you're the type of camper that wants to set up and forget about it for days and days but still need your vehicle for whatever. If you're a nomadic camper and plan on moving around a lot anyways an RTT is no big deal. I move around daily by choice so one way or another I'd be packing up camp everyday. Set up and tear down doesn't really take me any longer than my old ground tent, just more of a workout now as I'm too short to reach the roof so I have a step ladder that I have to lug around with me.

The trip will be most likely be in late July, 5 days, 3 states, 2 national parks, 4 national forests, 5 mountain ranges.... lots of beautiful things to see and it will be open to anyone as the roads are fairly mild (except for the mud). I'll add you to my list and keep you in the loop.
And you must bring the pugs! Love those little guys!

Same exact trip. I pulled the plug last year as I couldn't get enough people committed - there was a lot of interest but not a lot of folks could make it out in the time frame. I figure if I give everyone more warning this year that won't be an issue.

:amen:....this is me all day long!
Thank @ramonortiz55...this give me some kind of feel of what it is. I think if I plan far enough in advance I might be able to make this happen. The wife and I were supposed to go somewhere this summer to celebrate our 10year anniversary! This might me it!!
Something I learned a long time ago. If you are going mudding you really have to prepare your vehicle for it...it's almost...no...it's worst than water. Water goes away...mud stays until you take it off...yes even 3-4 weeks later...:angrygirl:

That is very true, we just splashed mid everywhere. Learned to clean the engine bay as soon as possible after playing in wet sloppy mud. I still like to play in it though, can't wait to get some new tires soon. The wheel spacers will probably push the tires outside the Limited flares.

Hmmm...cruise or 500+ miles of dirt roads with a bunch of strangers from the internet.... You may have a hard sell there but good luck!

    You do something geotech?

http://websoilsurvey.sc.egov.usda.gov/App/HomePage.htm You can plug in your address or any gps coordinates and see what is there! I makes maps that are on this site too. Good for everything from home gardening, to major farms, or highway construction.

If you are seeing staining it is probably the minerals in the dirt. Iron oxide and such. Getting that stuff off quick is the only way to stop it, and elbow grease.

I hate mud in the 4runner. I love mud in the work truck.

You get me the GPS coordinates and I can tell you what it is!

White is usually Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3) and has a lot of similar properties to clay.
Black is probably something shale based and high in organic carbon

If you are seeing a ton build up it is most likely due to moisture content. Not too dry, not too wet.

Is that because you don't have clean your work truck?

I am a civil structural engineer. I do foundations all the time. In fact, I am designing some drilled shafts right now.
