How easy is it to remove when you need to use your hitch?

Just use something less appealing, like a water bottle.

Bear with me on my description...

Simple plain/flat key with thin rare earth magnet glued to it. From the drivers seat look out your windshield at the gap below your hood. It's easy to fit your hand in there.

Friend leaves regular letting in center console and just slips that key under the gap of the hood when he goes out kayaking. When others are around he sets something on the hood to mask his key hiding movement. Every time I've seen him do it I remind myself to make one but I keep putting it off.

I leave my keys in the door pocket. Shocking, I know. It's worked flawlessly for 30 years.

You can fit a key in one of the little magnetic hide a key boxes in between the ridges of the bed under the bed mat in the back.
Also I guess some 2nd gens don't have a chip key, mines a 2006 4 cyl single cab and I have a $2 key I got at a flea market for it.

That's a good idea. The odds of someone needing/wanting a hitch ball and then choosing to steal the one with a lock on it is probably pretty slim.

If you have "Nerf" bars, the plastic ends pull off. When I used to go to Panama City thats where I put my keys.

That is an awesome idea except for one thing, if I need to stash my keys it usually means I am either on the boat fishing or at the beach. In either case when we get back to the truck I can promise you 3 things...

    1. I CRACKED MY FIRST BEER APPROX 4 SECS AFTER WE PARKED
    2. I AM FOR SURE NOT DRIVING HOME
    3. I FOR SURE WON'T REMEMBER THE COMBINATION!

    LOL!

    Had to say it :)

Before I get shit for this, I do understand the members here sharing their practices to the OP with good intentions. A couple things I need to point out:

    - Revealing where you keep your "hidden" or "spare" key on a public forum is insanely risky. Non-members (or even douchebag thief members *cough* the anticipating 100 page thread) can scope out this site, this thread, your hidden key location, your location, your build, your truck pics, etc. and attempt GTA.

    - The hidden hitch boxes are becoming a target here on the islands. Everyone has the same idea of not having to carry their keys so they install the hitch lock box and thieves have found a way to remove it entirely, break it open and then come back to steal the vehicle. It's been done in broad daylight in parking lots.

Now to actually contribute to the thread, when I used to pick opihi, I too would find hiding spots for me key but couldn't ease my mind about it at all. My MacGyver mind then came up with just wrapping the key itself in a couple paper towels, a good layer of aluminum foil crinkled tightly then in a Ziploc bag (name brand matters because store brand shit leaks). Then just kept the bag in my surf shorts pocket. Never a drop of saltwater touched the key nor ever got in the bag. For peace at mind, you could add an extra layer of paper towels outside the foil so you would know if water got inside the bag. Or you could add another Ziploc bag entirely.
