extreme rev when starting???

When starting my 2006 it will rev extremely high, one day going over 2000 rpms it appears the colder it is the worse it gets. Dealership say this is normal, but high rpm on a cold engine can't be good. Any comments appreciated....

 

Mine used to do it bad. Was bought certified used but guess what? Fucking dealer just left all the autolite bullshit in it just like they got it. Oil filter, battery & plugs all autolite. Plugs were at least 1/4" shorter than the Denso iridiums that are spec'd for the 2.7l. Anyway, after puttin the correct plugs in it, the startup idle stopped being all crazy, truck ran much smoother & better overall, better mpg. Just something you might check on.

 

This is normal from many threads started on this same subject will bear out. As the ambient temperature drops, the ECU will run the engine faster to speed warmup and reduce emissions. One reason they can do this is the use of lighter weight oils, such as 5 and 0w-20, which speed oil flow to the cyl head area. The pour point on these oils is usually in the -40 degree range. Mine has seen as high as 2500 RPM on starts around 0 degrees.

 

when i went camping the other weekend and it snowed and hailed on us, the next morning it took a sec to turn over and when it did the rpm's were well over 2500, just stuck it in 1st and it drove itself

 

The difference in temperatures at startup making the ecu rev more when colder & less when warmer is fully understood (only speaking for me). There is a point when it's beyond reason tho. Mine did it regardless of temp & the fact that the plugs were physically 1/4" or more shorter in the cylinder was freaking the ecu out is different situation. With the correct plugs it now acts as it should & as you've explained. Not sure how far out of reason or not it is for the OP.

One more thing, will Toyota authorize 0w30 oil in the vehicle?????
