Can my clutch master be bad with no external leakage?

I'm wondering if there is an internal seal that fluid can leak around, much like sometimes happens with a brake MC.

Sometimes I push my clutch down and it does nothing, other times it doesn't disengage until I get the pedal almost to the floor. There is always resistance to the pedal, although it feels a bit funny on the times the clutch acts strangely.

No external leaks visible around master or slave, reservoir is full.

Sounds like there's air in the line. Have you tried to bleed it?

Your master and or slave are worn out---best to replace BOTH--do it BEFORE you get stranded---ask me how I KNOW-LOL!
It fairly simple do it yourself project.
The rubber washers are about to fail--DO IT NOW!!

    To answer the OP's questions.
Yes, the master can leak internally while the slave will only leak to the outside world. The master is the likely culprit but it is by no means a bad idea to replace both.

Thanks - I'll replace just about anything as long as it doesn't mean dropping the transmission out of this thing again. Master looks easy, slave looks a little more uncomfortable (I've had it off three times when the transmission came out). I'll order parts...and get to the work as soon as I wrap up the head gasket job I'm in the middle of on my other truck.

keep us posted. Another indicator that the rubber washers are worn--fluid in the master reservoir is dark or black.
Resistance is from the spring in the reservoir pushrod and or pedal spring(if there is one).
Another test--push the clutch pedal SLOWLY to the floor--no disengaging--definately the washers are worn out. Push it FAST--it works.
In the past--there was a total rebuild kit for the master--It could save you a few bucks. Much easier to just replace the whole unit.
I have done both- depending on your time-Total replacement is faster and a little easier.

well, that was an easy swap. Hopefully the new master will fix my problem. The old one looked all messed up where the plunger went in, and the fluid in the reservoir was black.

    Yes.

Mine went to complete sh*t with no leaks at all. I changed the master and slave cylinders at the same time.

Wouldn't you call it an internal leak if the slave piston's rubber seal failed, allowing fluid to pass by?
