Frame rust recall

They didn't say after the inspection, so we'll see when they start taking it apart on Monday. Like 81shark said..."let the dealer break it, get new parts" . The shocks aren't leaking so they should be okay. Will post more info on Monday

 

It's not that the shocks leak...it's that they damage them taking them off.. the bushings are seized on the bolts. Also I'm sure after numerous yrs and miles, most are blown too.

 

Gotcha, I'll keep an update on their progress and parts they say need replacing.

 

Brought my '08 (125k) in this morning for inspection. Got the call a few hours later, frame had some perforation on front left portion and failed. Still safe to drive apparently and new frame was estimated to be in around Feb/March.

Well, I guess I spoke too soon. Partly my fault for not doing a more detailed check up of the truck when I picked it up, today almost fucked the engine up, fuckers forgot to reattach the clamp to the main cooling hose going into the block and came off today, got coolant all over the place and a big mess, luckily it was right in my driveway after taking the truck around the block once. Good thing I had not gone anywhere far or would be really screwed.

 

I was told about 4 months at most.... And it took 7 altogether....

 

1st post here. I was on a four month waiting list just for inspection (scheduled in oct pushed to feb). I have a 3"x1" hole in my frame. Was driving by another dealer, saw several rusted frames and 4 new one sitting in back, so I thought I'd talk to the service mgr. They inspected it, failed it, took pictures, and submitted to toyota right on the spot. Said it'd be about 3 months for the frame to come in.

I have a 2006, 4.0 L, 4x4, TRD/off road pkg, 80K miles. I am planning on replacing the exhaust (cat-back), shocks (bilstein 5100), and coil springs. Not sure which springs to pair with the bilsteins. I'm looking for a good ride, don't do intentionally do much off roading. Any suggestions?

 

Welcome to TW Beagles. A lot of information and good people here. Why are you going to replace exhaust ? Going with an aftermarket system ? Unless you're going with an aftermarket system there is really no reason to replace the exhaust, the OEM's last forever. As for the front coilovers, just stick with the stock TRD 4600 Bilstein's. IMO I would go with 5100 Bilsteins on the rear.
Take a look in the 2nd Gen Market Place for a set of new takeoff coilover/shocks and save yourself a pile of cash.

I just had my frame done and bought new take off front coilovers, upper control arms and inner/outer tie rods for $250.00 from a guy here. They had 1000 miles on them.

 

Thanks for the input, Tinker. If the OEM exhaust will last me another 10 years or so, I'm all set. Right now there's just a bit of exterior corosion on the muffler and tailpipe. Never have checked out the market place here (what a F*&*ing newbie). At 80K miles, the only thing my truck has needed is the regular maint..

I just want to take advantage of the chance to replace anything at the parts only price while I have the chance. Anything else anybody can think of, let me know.

 

Btw, the rear springs are FLAT from hauling firewood and gravel. Can't wait to get them replaced. (Not planning on doing firewood too much anymore.)

Hi Looking to buy a 2nd gen Tacoma for my son and I'm interested in this frame replacement stuff.

If I buy a 2ng gen that has rust ( I live in NH, def Cold Weather!) do I qualify for frame repair? Meaning can any owner be it the first, second, third... qualify?

 

Potentially yes, by why put your son in that situation with his vehicle?

 

Just an option to explore, he is 15 today and we have started to research what to buy. At this point the 2 options he likes best is a Tacoma or a Jeep Unlimited, I'd rather see him in a Tacoma so I joined this site to figure out if that really is the right choice AND what year/drive line is best.

As for this particular problem I been around long enough to know vehicles have problems in many shapes and sizes, body rot, engine failure, faulty suspension , etc. At one point or another you have to pick a problem and deal with it. Admittedly a frame recall seems like alot but it also sounds like Toyota is dealing with this problem by replacing the frame and a majority of the suspension. If that is the case those are items I/he won't need to deal with after buying a used vehicle. I just want to make sure I'm covered if I do go this route. Sounds like the best idea would be to have a toyota dealer do the pre-buy inspection, that way I can get a better feel about the frame condition and that dealers stance on the frame recall.

I guess another note is we have time..... Something alot of people on this thread don't have which appears to be one of the major aggravations.

 

As long as the vin of the truck is part of the recall, any current owner qualifies for the inspection (and replacement if it fails)

 

Only if you buy 2005-2008 truck and until March next year. After that you are on your own...
If you buy 2gen that is 2005-2008 and you live in NH you have until March 31 2016 I believe to do inspection
