Custom sub box in 08 DBL Cab

Ok, I've been on and off with car audio over the years. I remember back in the 90's when Rockford was all the rage and Punch was it. Seems I can't shake that old school stigma, even though I'm well aware Rockford sold out. I got my hands on an old 10" Stage 3 Punch sub, had it in my old Explorer Sport Trac. This thing pounds for a 10, really good tight bass. I'm going to put it behind the passenger seat in a custom box. Here's a stock photo:




I already got the plastic bin out and held the sub in place to see if I can make it work, looks like I've got the room, barely.

Looks like a fun project! I had 2 Rockford subs in my 4Runner and they sounded great! What amp are you going to use?

 

Should work well. What i ALWAYS recommend to people is to build the box as big as you can. It is REALLY easy to shrink the volume of a box but not the other way. Thats my .02

 

I have an Alpine MRD-M300 mono amp. The Punch is a DVC, so I wire it up for 2 OHM so I can get 300 watts out of the little sucker. My old 500 watt amp sh!t the bed a while back.

Good idea, still trying to do volume calcs now.

Got my box built, and installed. I had to modify the design quite a bit from my original plan. It's in and working really well, the CF volume is just about perfect because it sounds great, wayyy better than when I had it in my Exploder. The thing pounds harder, and it has much better sound quality than before. I also made a side panel to mount the amp, looks really clean. I'll get some pictures posted up hopefully later today.

I started to take photos when I started, but quickly quit because my design changed, and my wife was giving me crap about working on this project too much lol. Only thing I really want to do for the box is put a couple coats of plastidip over the whole thing. Hopefully give it a nice finish, something different.

 

its actually harder to make it smaller then seem bigger by adding pollyfil you can actually trick a sub into thinking the bot is up to 50% bigger to 'shrink' the size you would have to add wood inside then its just wasted space

 

The dust cap on my sub got borked a while back. I bought a recone kit for it but it still works great. Why recone it if it still works fine?

Eventually I'll pull the thing and do it, just don't see the point right now.

Like I said before I want to put a couple coats of Plasti Dip on the box. I'm also going to dip my wheels, they're the steel rims and they look poopy. Lol

 

Polyfill is a crunch as a last ditch n having the box the right size in the first place is better. On top of that, adding polyfill easy your right but the "wasted space a couple of blocks of 2/4 takes up is really negligent.....

 

The volume wasn't an issue for me, it was the size of the sub driver. I needed 6" of depth from the front face of the box just to fit the sub in there. I ended up with about 6.25" which allows airflow through the voice coil vent.

I had to use polyfill in my Exploder box because there just wasn't enough room under the seat to get the volume.

 

If you build the box out of 1/2 birch ply you have that extra depth needed without worrying about it

 

Actually the back side of the box behind the driver is made out of 1/2" Birch ply. That's the only way I was able to get the room. I wanted to be able to lower the seat back down all the way without hitting the sub surround.

You're correct on the pole vent. I keep calling it a VC vent, old habits die hard.
