LSD?

Alright, don't call me stupid, but how do I know if I have a LSD? Need to know if I will need the differential additive when I change the fluid.

 

Stock first-gen Tacomas did not come with factory LSD, but its possible the original owner installed an aftermarket unit, or a differential from a Tundra (which did have a factory LSD option).

 

Toyota puts a sticker on the back of the diif, says LSD. Also if you jack the truck up so both rear wheels are off the ground with the truck in neutral, turn one rear wheel by hand. If the opposite tire turns in the same direction it has a LSD. If it turns the opposite direction, it's open.

Some do some don't. I've never had a problem. Just wipe everything down before you reuse.

Well, I stand corrected about Tacomas not having the LSD option. It appears that it was an option in some second gens.

I believe my 14 RC came with an automatic locking diff...

 

No problem, Rick. No harm done. I jacked it up and spun the wheels. It's not LSD. Thanks Ruggybuggy. Did the serpentine belt while I was at it. No more squeak.

 

I'm on a mission to service evrything I can possibly do myself. Dealer said they bought it with a broken speedometer so they dont know how many miles it really has. Carfax says it was a corporate vehicle. Fleet? The last reported odometer reading was 259,599! But it looks well cared for. Doesn't look at all like it has so many miles. I'm hoping that because it was a fleet vehicle that it was serviced right.

What your 14 has is the same thing that everything 2009+ has, which is a computer program running on your anti-lock brakes controller, which slows down wheels that are measured to be spinning faster than their counterpart on the same axle.

This is essentially the same as a limited slip differential, but slower reaction and lower maintenance.

 

I have a 2009 2wd 4 cyl with 5 speed. If I press my traction control button in for a few seconds until traction control turns off, will both rear tires then spin if on wet pavement or dirt/grass?

 

If you have moderately balanced traction, both wheels will spin. If one side has drastically more traction, the other side will spin.
