Just recently bought a 2004 access cab TRD Taco and was thinking about putting in an aftermarket sunroof.

I've searched the forums and have found tons on 2nd gen Taco's with aftermarket roofs.

I'm not asking about leaking as I had an aftermarket sunroof in my 9 year old WRX that was awesome and I'm willing to take the chance.

    I have two other questions:

    1) I will be doing some moderate offroading. Will the bending in the truck structure affect the sunroof??? Seems like is shouldn't as some 1st gen's came with a stock moonroof.

    2) Should I go with a moonroof (where it only pops up) as it may be more structurally sound?? I ask this as the installer says that the only way I can have a retractable sunroof is using the "spoiler type" where the glass actually pops out of the top of the roof and goes backwards as seen here: http://www.webastoshowroom.com/300info.html

I'm worried that if I'm offroading with the roof open, the glass might bounce up and down and get screwed up!

    Any thoughts??

Any 1st gen's out there with an aftermarket sunroof??? Please post pics or PM me. Also, if anyone has a sunroof that actually slides into the roof (non spoiler type) let me know.

    Thanks

I saw one a while back that goes down and then in, it's just a lot more work for the installer. If you're jumping the truck I wouldn't leave it in the open back position. If you're doing more crawling you just have to be careful that nothing overhead is going to hit it.

Or you could check out the ones like in the old toyota trucks. The glass could pop up like a moonroof or pop out and you store the glass behind the seat or leave it at camp.

    RESERECTION OF THREAD.

Anyone have actual pictures? I really wanna do this but now that I read that

    1. It might leak
    And
    2. It may not be structural for off-road

It kinda turns me off. So if anyone has it, show it off.

You could also maybe ask some 3rd Gen guys. From what I heard, the 3rd Gen is the first to come with a moonroof from the factory. Lots of 4runners out there with em and they're wheelin.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
You guys would be surprised how tough the glass they use on sunroofs is, you really have to be trying to break them. I've seen cars rolled over and the roof smashed to hell and all the windows busted out except the sunroof. Same goes for them getting hailed on. Not sure what they do to them to make 'em so tough but it's pretty significant.

I had one in my old CJ5's hardtop and took it wheeling many times and never had issues with it. It was just a popup style and it could be fully removed and tucked away too if I desired. If I was going to do that to my truck, I'd go that route that way you don't have to worry about messing around with electronics that can be a nightmare if they start having problems. There's nothing worse than a electric sunroof with wiring problems.

Tempered. Hit them on their face and they are very strong, hit them on the edge and they will break. Same as high-rise building windows.
I tried to smash the moonroof on my old prelude with a hammer and it wouldn't break!

My moonroof just pops up. I would prefer if it slid fully open but the pop-up allows for decent airflow and a ton of light. I find non-moonroof'd vehicles super dark now. haha

Did you install it yourself or have it done? It looks really good and fitting in your sig pic.

My '98 xtra cab SR5 has a sunroof that seems to be the same as Rockey. Side-to-side the glass is 30-inches, however the front to back dimensions are a little tricky because it is slightly longer in the middle (19-inches) compared to the front-back measurement on each edge (18.5-inches). Therefore the glass is not a perfect rectangle, which is probably a design feature to match the curvature and shape of the roofline.

Should be fine if not wheeling hard, you have a full framed truck not a unibody so its a non issue. The moonroof is an additional thing Toyota offered on many models not limited to any particular one. As aftermarket it is just as tough as the original from experience, I’ve even put in drop down rear windows on hopping lowrider yotas!, which never broke, just break out the beer and saws all and measure twice and you’ll be happy seeing stars at night with your girl.

If you do this, I’d strongly suggest a non electric one. I owned a 93 Lexus SC300 that had an aftermarket power sunroof from the PO, that damn thing caused so many electrical gremlins it was ridiculous.

Thank You! Didn’t want to go too big and run into a structural roll over beam - chances are if I stay that size or smaller we should be in good shape.
