What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Gotta give the tire the extra inches to expend for heavy impact or bump especially when off roads

 

I like the idea but a couple of things may complicate that. One is the shape your hood. The '01-'04 hood has a rise in it that the grill follows. That rise isn't there on the '98-'00 hoods. Easy to fix by swapping in an '01 hood. Also, I'm pretty sure that Toyota changed the shade of green slightly in '01. Only noticeable when they are next to each other. FWIW, they did it with the dark red too.

 

do you have to get different fenders too? i thought i read that the corner lights were different.

 

I don't think so. But I'm not really qualified. I'm only going by what I've read on here. There are a couple of guys that did front clip swaps on here. @Madjik_Man Usually to get away from the '98-'00 front grill and headlights.

It is true that the marker lights vary a little from model years. But has to do with how they mount to the fender. Now that I think about it a bit more, swapping the front grill may present issues with mounting the headlight housings too.

 

Yeah I would need a new hood... maybe fix the one on my old truck now and repaint!

 

Someone on here did a swap from 2000 to 2001 or something and used the same fenders!

 

I went retro on my '04. Changed it to a '98.

The core support/headlight buckets are a bit different and the marker lights are different. My '04 fenders fit the marker lights, but there was no real good way to secure them in. I just tie wired them from the inside. If tie wire is good enough for the airplane buiz, its good enough for my marker lights.

 

Yep. Fenders, hood, grill, corner and headlights. Older bumper works with them i think though

 

How much paint did it take and how did you apply it?

Still have to weld on the frame end caps and finish up moving the blinkers up to the corner lights.

 

Me. All I used was new headlights, hood, hood latch, corner lights, grill. Can keep fenders and core support. My conversion page is below in my signature!

Older bumper works as well and ran with it until just recently until I got a free 01-04 bumper and that works perfectly too.

 

I honestly can't remember, with your frame it won't take as much since its not as rusty. I think we bought 2 gallons, definitely had some left over but can't remember. We used cheap little paint brushes, worked fine. The one thing we did wrong was apply it to thick in places. Your suppose to do thin light coats. It draws in moisture to cure, and when its to thick bubbles form...will this hurt anything? I don't know.

Right you did a real good write up! I have all that too from my totaled truck! And I have a plate bumper so don't have to worry about the stock one!

 

Thanks! I actually made money off my conversion by selling parts off my truck. What put me under was the paint for the hood. If you can just swap all that stuff over and sell the 00 stuff, can make a few bucks

 

I'd have to get the hood painted but I have a hookup lol!

Went camping last night



Also found a puddle of what I think is oil, looked around couldn't find anything. Then I looked at the oil filter and it looked kinda gross, so I tightened it up so let's hope that's what it was. Oil wasn't even low so I guessed I overfilled it
