Wind noise found - lets fix it!

The only time that I get the whistling or howling is in a cross wind. It sounds to me like it's coming from the drivers side mirror. I wonder if has anything to do with those fins that they put on the mirrors? I got a pretty good video on my phone that I'll show the dealer when I take it in.

 

We all tried that...That was the easiest thing to eliminate.

Same here, I had 1500 miles on my Tacoma before I heard it for the first time and only a couple times since.

 

Why bring your particular problem into an unrelated thread then?

 

Fill it up with silicone or try a seal weld.

 

I live up in the mountains the winds blows out of the NW some times up to 60 mph. sitting dead still my truck will howl right behind the rear access door in the wind. There is a pocket behind the rear lower door edge I can block it with my hand and the noise goes away it is a source of noise I can't say it is what people are hearing but I know it's there.

 

im going to put some small clamps to that vertical rubber piece between the bed
and cab to see if it does anything. it might change to a higher pitch. lol

 

ok forget the small clamps, they don't fit well. I found some dark grey water heater
pipe insulating foam from home depot. they are stealth and fit great. going for a test
drive soon. hopefully this helps.

 

Sound can resonate, reflect and bounce off of the metal, that's what makes it hard to find and fix...
Toyota use to be the best at this...
It was strange that dyno matting my roof reduced 90% of the wind noise I thought was coming from the a pillar....
Added bonus, I'll take it....

But reduce wind noise, now I can hear other stuff.... Next project????

Dyno matt behind the rear seats might help with the howl??????

Probably where my highway noise comes from.

 

The black pipe insulation will most likely work perfectly. However, my guess is that the wind is whistling through there at one specific point. IE.. the sides, the top or the bottom. So, if you test these individually you may find that you don't have to stuff that insulation everywere.

 

I think it from the bed sitting so close to the back of the cab.

 

What I hear is clearly aero (as wind buffets affect it) at 35-45 mph all the time. Today I was in a good headwind and it was kicking in at 20-30 mph and wasn't kicking in on the way back (tailwind). It always sounds like the mirror area, but nothing that I do affects it. I have slowly been working my way back taping holes etc., but what you are describing sounds like a good possible culprit. I knew if somebody had good wind outside the vehicle, that it would uncover itself. It has become a minor challenge for me, but the sound really doesn't bother me.

ESPECIALLY one that claims "it's found"

This one is a non starter. Those of us dealing the howling noise that is constant and never goes away between 35-45MPH will see this thread is of no help and move on..

 

It clearly says "WIND NOISE" in the thread title, so what it is claiming as "found" should be of no interest to those with a mechanical problem.

 

The OP mentions a "howl" not just wind noise......The howl is what we have constantly. Without regard to outside conditions.

We only recently were told it looks like it may be mechanical because nothing changes it. Wind direction, following close, cross winds. The noise is constant and does not alter with conditions.

There is no definite answer but they are now leaning in the mechanical direction, Found This out two days ago. There are a handful of us working on this along with dealing with Toyota engineers and Regional techs So naturally any noise thread will be looked at.

I would say of all the "issues" presented this one is getting the most attention from Toyota because there are a lot of us who banded together and opened tickets and are working closely with our dealer's Service Managers. Who knows how many non forum members have brought this up with their dealers. I am guessing because of the prominence of the noise, a few,

Toyota has finally recognized it's a problem. That was our first hurdle. We were being told this was a "characteristic of the truck" Now that they have concluded it's not normal, they will find the solution. People need to know which noise is the one we are working on.

All your posts of unsubstantiated mechanical noises only serves to confuse those who might not share your plight.
You're desperate for a solution and deliberately obfuscate all noise threads with your recruitment efforts.
