2016 Tacoma Vibration in Gas Pedal, Floorbed, and Steering Wheel

Glad you caught it. Our test drives were on freeways with grooves and my wife and I both think that the little vibration caused by the grooves diverted our attention away from the real vibration underneath. We test drove a Canyon SLT at a dealer nearby the Toyota dealer and drove the same freeway/roadway loop for the test. In retrospect, we both thought the Canyon had less freeway vibration in the wheel from the grooves than the Taco; however, we attributed it to the tires at the time.

It does appear as if Toyota has 'discovered' this issue and is working on it. We shall see.

 

Yeah, their 'working' on it, but unfortunately you won't see any permanent fixes until year 2 at the earliest.

 

If that's the case, my truck will be long gone by then and I shall never buy a Toyota again....

Just got back from a 500 mile trip, travelling across the Navajo Nation, doing business setups. Found a new spot where the vibration comes in long and hard. Was on US 40 E/B in slushy conditions with the cruise control on. I began to climb a slight grade and the vehicle kicked down to 5th, and the vibrations came back. Then, the grade got steeper and the trans kicked to 4th and went to 3500RPM to maintain the speed and BOOM....all the way up the grade at 3500RPM the steering wheel and floorboard vibration got pretty intense. Hit the crest, turned off the cruise (I've noticed it'll stay in a lower gear unless you take the cruise off...), upshifted to 5th, and the vibration went away as the RPMs dropped below that 3500RPM. Now, I've got it pegged to be the worst between 2100-2300ish RPM and then the new 3500RPM discovery....

The theory that it is a transmission problem seems quite logical and I have figured that the cruise control issue of not shifting up once a load is gone is, too, related to the transmission and faulty programming. The cruise doesn't work well unless you are a perfectly flat surface. Otherwise, the trans will downshift to maintain speed on grades of any kind but fail to upshift once you are past the grade. Tested this on rolling hilly run through The Res and it would never upshift going down any hills it had to downshift to pull.

I spoke at length to a Monique, who is a senior case manager with Toyota Customer Care on Tuesday afternoon and now have two case numbers with Toyota (one dealer and one mine). I pressed that this was not just an annoyance but a safety issue (I've now read other posts elsewhere where people have their arms going numb to the elbows) and, IMHO, a long-term reliability issue as the vibration has to create infrastructure issues.

I told Monique that I was pressing this issue to either be resolved or I was going to be forced to dump the truck as this was horrid R&D for a MY 2016 vehicle and it was even more perplexing in that it was a Toyota flagship vehicle that was proudly introduced as a total, great, amazing, etc re-design.

The drum beat goes on in the quest for a fix!

 

On your trip to the Navajo nation, did you go off road? Most of the Indian's trucks are covered in mud, maybe you got some mud on the wheel or drive shaft that caused an imbalance.

Ahhh, you have been to The Res! Yes, many of those Native American cars and trucks are covered in mud and dirt; and, by the time I got home, so was mine (couldn't tell it was that gorgeous blue, that's for sure, unless you looked at the roof!).

Your thought is appreciated; however, the issue originally was truly noticed on a freeway trip to Las Vegas when the truck was new and still perfectly clean, and then my trip to The Res and before I hit any of the bad roads, the buzzy vibration was there on the freeway as I drove from Flagstaff to BIA 12, which is where I turn north off the freeway and into Window Rock. Once I got home, a thorough cleaning was initiated, and there, unfortunately, is no change in the vibrations coming through the steering wheel and the floorboards. Since the engine has been around for a while and was originally used (it is my understanding) in Lexus vehicles, I am starting to think it is an issue with the new automatic transmission and maybe it's programming? It certainly will be interesting to see what Toyota finds out....

 

Hate to dig up this thread as it seems there has not been any action on it. But I have a DCSBOR M/T and have been noticing this same thing. I think it is getting worse. I have 2300 miles on it and just finished a 300 mile drive. Feet and legs are tingling as I type this. I notice it at most speeds, when the truck hits grades and works harder I notice it more. I feel it in steering wheel, floor board and drivers door. Feels to me like its coming from the engine.

 

Hard to say...I think it's the trans....this engine has been around for a few years on the Lexus side so it has technically been well vetted. Call and add ur complaint to the collective. I will post as soon as I get the engineers report on my truck...they are here on 1/13...

And, yes, it does seem worse when there is any, even slight, load on the vehicle...

I just noticed that you have an M/T...u r the first without the A/T I've seen w this problem....curiouser and curiouser...

 

If my issue is the same thing. It can't be the transmission as I have a Manual.

Same issue in both threads, though this is the first I've heard of an Off-Road manual transmission.

Add one more to the list - My 2016/Sport/AC/MT does it too. 2000 RPM, feel it in upper gears...Feel in the throttle peddle with my toes. That's 60 mph in 6th where I spend a lot of time. Have 36,000 miles on it - Guess I have just gotten used to it. Clay

I would't count on Toyota fixing vibration problem.When I contacted them about it they told me there is nothing wrong and it's supposed to vibrate.I would have to live with it. When I test drove it it was smooth as silk (may have a way to turn off Atkinson-cycle).This is a great response from Toyota! Absolutely my last Toyota!
