i'll stick with the back of my truck, i don't enjoy packing up a wet muddy tent anymore. i fish for trout, and move camp alot sometimes. i break camp in less than 5 mins.

5/4"x12 lumber that was pre milled to be used as steps on a staircase so the edge on one side was rounded off. i only really needed 5/4x10 but the only stuff they had in those dimensions were treated and pre primed which i didnt want either of those things. so i opted for the stair stock and ripped them to the widths that i needed. i didnt thing about using the pieces that i ripped off as the runners for the plywood shelf so i bought 2x2 stock to use, that never got used. but i think the 5/4 came out to about $4/ft which is kinda steep i thought. but oh well it looks better imho.

dont get me wrong i still backpack in and set up shop when the ladyfriend and i want to get away, but this is mainly for solo hunting/fishing excursions where i like to be as close as possible to the area im hunting and not have to worry about any breakdown, or leaving stuff behind. still cant beat a good backpacking trip!

How did you work the positioning of the tent on the rack with it that way.
I too have a shell and have been thinking about an rtt. Would like to position it the way you have it for the kids.
How are the dimensions the way you have it. Serious overhang?
    Thanks.

Not really, with the tent opening over the back it sits perfectly over the camper shell. It sits close to the back where the shell starts to slope at the top of the back window but zero overhang. It does hang a little over the side of the camper shell but still well within the width of the truck. We have the CVT Mt Shasta which is 56" wide by 48" long when it sits like we have it. It less wind resistance to mount it to open side ways which I'm sure is why a lot of people mount it that way.

Here's a pic of the truck from the front. I don't have any pics to show you a side view of the tent overhang and the tent is already off the truck for the season but I'll try to get one next time it's on the truck.

Thanks. This pic is great. I see that CVT make a couple smaller tents too (48x48). But the Shasta fits really well at 56 wide.
Did you have to do anything modified to mount it to the top? Like the brackets, etc.
    Thanks for the replies.

We are super happy with the Mt Shasta at 56 wide. It's enough space for me and my wife, 70lb German Shepherd, and 40lb Border Collie to sleep comfortably without having the unnecessary bulk of the larger ones.

If you already have a rack setup on your topper it's as simple as bolting the rails on the RTT so it will face the direction you want it to. If not, there are many ways to mount the RTT, from full roof racks like a Baja rack, roof racks like Thule or Yakima, or even building custom mounts for the RTT to keep it as low as possible. It really depends what is most important to you. Full roof racks are expensive, Thule and Yakima racks are reasonable but can add height to it, and custom mounts can range anywhere in between.

This is good to hear. Thanks for the info.
I do have some options - BajaRack on the front, Yakima tracks and racks on the shell.
Have some time too. The kids are 3 and 1.
I really like the idea of two levels of sleeping quarters. :D

Sloquet Hot Springs, BC, Canada. Just some fun in the snow! This was my first time ever winter camping in the Tacoma. It was a total blast with some unreal scenery. Definitely going to have to make this trip a yearly tradition. We did the loop and came in from the south via Harrison West FSR and left north through Pemberton/Whistler. It was about 100km offroad to the springs. Got about halfway before all the other tire tracks stopped, the road got rough, and the snow got deep. Everyone else turned around at this point but we pushed forward without issue. We camped one night, then headed back to the main FSR and headed north towards Pemberton. Its about another 100km from the springs north back onto pavement in Pemberton, most of which was fairly slushy or plowed and not nearly as rough as the route to the south. From Pemberton it is a short drive to the Ski Resort Municipality of Whistler and then a few hours drive down Highway 99 (Sea to Sky) back towards Vancouver.

    On the way there...

The Hot springs sit just alongside this raging river. In the summertime when its a little less turblent its an awesome place to dip into to cool down after sitting in the springs.

I have a Mr. Heater Portable Buddy Propane heater that we used to heat up my easy up canopy. We brought lots of firewood with us, wore the proper winter gear and footwear, packed good sleeping bags and lots of blankets. I had a snuggle buddy (the GF) and we burned a candle lantern blacked out with tinfoil in the back of my camper canopy during the night to heat it up a bit and control the condensation. The booze, most of which was drank while soaking in the hot springs, helped warm us up.
The weather was actually fairly mild. Just a few degrees below zero (Celsius). I was expecting and prepared for it to be much colder than it was.
