2TR-FE buring oil

I searched Google, came up empty handed. Searched TW, also came up empty handed.

I did an oil change on my truck about a week ago, drained out MAYBE 2 liters of oil? (takes just over 5) I changed the filter and all that jazz and was refilling it. The new oil on the stick was dirty.

Since refilling I've put 1000ish KM on the truck and its burnt about a liter of oil.

Anyone else experience their 2TR burning oil?

 

What oil are you using? How long did you let it drain before refilling with oil? How many miles on spark plugs?

 

I'm using the recommended 0w20 weight. I let it drain until it stopped draining and was just a drip. There's roughly 40km on them now.

 

Here is what I'd do; idle warm motor with gunk 5 minute flush then shut off. Let the engine drain for at least 45 minutes (1 hour or more would be better) Slap some new spark plugs in that bitch then a week or so down the line change out the oil filter again and install a new filter (in an attempt to get as much filth out of the engine as you can) then take it from there. That's really low. You didn't get a low oil light or anything? Is the Exhaust emitting any blue smoke? Could be a leak in the oil lines or faulty valves.

 

I was planning on changing the oil again this week to see if it comes out any clearer. I'll have to look into that Gunk 5 minute flush stuff. Do you think crusty spark plugs would cause some sort of oil burning? I figured there would be a loss of power, but I can't see how it would cause it to burn oil. Not saying you're wrong just saying. I'll take a peak at them tomorrow, back shifts suck.

No blue smoke that I'm aware of, however I do have an exhaust leak and it recently went from "meh" sooty to "holy shit are you burning coal through that thing" sooty.

Okay so it sounds like it's definitely due to burning any not leaks. When you change your plugs note if they look odd to you at all. My guess is a faulty valve.

 

Oh I know for sure its burning. I replaced my throw bearing last week and I spend a lot of time under it doing assorted things. Plus if it leaked ANY fluid on my dads driveway he would legitimately kill me.

Because you're in Canada I'm guessing that "kill" means mild scolding? Sorry couldn't resist. Good luck to you on this. Could be a thousand reasons its burning. You should try to hook it up to a code scanner before you take it to a mechanic as it might have something pending that isn't serious enough to kick the check engine light on.

 

That's a funny Canadian joke! But you're more or less right.. I am the mechanic! The only thing the truck goes anywhere for is alignments. If I had to pay for someone else to fix my truck I wouldn't be able to afford to wheel!

Do you do oil changes yourself? You didnt drain the transmission, right? Not trying to be smart, just eliminate possibilities. Never heard of the 2TR using oil even at high mileage.

 

Also, check your PCV valve or replace just to be safe.

 

My Taco is manual! I would have to try really really hard to get that 14 mil socket onto the 24 mil transmission drain plug I'm pretty competent when it comes to my mechanical ability.

I guess neither has google... I can't find anything. Although, my Google skills are lacking.

 

I was thinking about something along those lines, I'm hoping its something like that rather than a head gasket, rings, etc.

No coolant in my oil or loss of coolant though, and there doesn't seem to be any sort of loss of power like I would expect to see with a blown HG.

2TR does use *some* oil, like everything else does (and contrary to every fanatic's claims of "never a drop"), but that's way too much. I observe around 1L/10,000 km, which is what I'm using for OCI.

How is the engine running? Any noticeable loss of power or increase in fuel consumption?
Have you checked the intake for oil splattering out the crankcase vent?
Could be bad valve stem seal. If the oil is dumping out the crankcase vent, look at the exhaust side (high pressure). If not, look at the intake side (low pressure) drawing oil directly into the cylinder.

Lack of blue smoke, plus your observable consumption rate of 1L/1000km indicates that the problem just started recently (if you went from 5 to 2, plus an extra liter of consumption after the oil change, that's 4L consumed = 4000 km). Catalytic converter is still cleaning up the oil being dumped, but that won't be for too much longer, after which the blue smoke will start.

FYI: oil capacity is 5.8L. Might as well call it "6" and make life easy.

 

I would start with a compression test,to check overall health of the motor.How many miles?Original owner?Like others said,could be many things.If the vehicle was used for many short trips,it is possible that sludge built up in the top end,and oil return holes may be plugged?Remove the spark plugs and make note of condition of each plug.

 

Compression test will *NOT* indicate condition of valve stem seals.
