This is hilarious. Is there anything you Texans don't know? You get a lot of ice in DFW, TX? Cause we have ice on the roads six or more months out of the year here in North Pole, Alaska.

I'm not on studded or even studless winter tires. I'm on the same M+S rated aggressive all terrain type of tire that half of this forum is on. The flick of the 4x4 switch in the truck is night and day on ice.

One can never have too many light bars.
Apparently there's some crazy ass ice in DFW.

The ice in DFW isn't horrible, but it turns everything into a cluster fuck because nobody knows what to do and most the city's are not prepared in the least bit, and the next day it's gone. But 4X4 on ice does help and does not spin like a 2wd I'm not sure what he means

For the few times you are going to be on snow go 4x2.

Hell I grew up in Alberta and in 47 years I never owned a 4x4. A couple of 4x2 pickups but never a 4x4. Some but not all oilfield pickups were 4x4 but a lot were not. I appreciate the 4x4 enthusiasts on this site but you simply do not need 4x4 to drive in snow. If it is snowing so bad or the road conditions are so bad you think a 4x2 would be unsafe you are not likely going to be any safer in a 4x4. Stay in your hotel/motel or at home. Front wheel drive vehicles are great in snow conditions and fun to drive in snow. Pick-ups with rear wheel drive only require some skill in snow. Weight over the rear wheels helps.

From what I have seen folks in the sun shine south are for the most clueless when it comes to driving on snow and ice anyway. How they would manage using 4x4 would be anyone's guess.

Good snow tires would be a better investment than 4x4 and if you do go 4x4 make sure you have snow tires on all four wheels if you really do think you are going to run into heavy snow. Hard off road tires might be ok in snow but would be pretty much useless on ice.

You don't need 4x4 to drive down the highway or city streets in snow. Don't park in an even slightly downhill facing parking space though. And have fun getting going at a stop light facing up hill on ice.

It's not like couple of thousand extra bucks just disappears on 4x4s. The added cost reflects in the resale value and ease of resale.

I don't know jack about driving on snow and ice, so I'll leave that alone, but I will reiterate one point and mention one that has not come up yet (that I saw):

    Facts:
    1. 4x4 Trucks have better resale than 4x2.
    2. 4x4 Trucks get noticeably worse gas mileage (I think it's around 2 mpg, but they may claim 1 mpg)

That said, and understanding I know nothing of snow driving, my first thought after reading your OP was that you should get a 4x2. Lower cost and better mileage. Also, I think you get more payload and towing since the truck is lighter by a few hundred pounds. I wouldn't be getting a Tacoma if I wasn't planning significant off-road travel, so for me it was an easy decision to go 4x4.

    A 4x4 in 4x2 mode .... is a 4x2.

    Imagine that.

MPG difference is fuck all. how much extra weight are you looking at for 4wd compartments? No noticeable effect on fuel economy.

resale value was mentioned in several posts already. Spend an extra couple grand now. Have 4wd. Sell for a few grand more in the future. Win Win.

There's a reason why Subarus are better on ice than a Toyota Corolla. To say 4wd doesn't help on ice.... just absurd.

Guys, he is in CA. Lol. Me too. Owned both, driven of road both. Depends on driver. Yes I have driven on ice. Its fun. Got the bucks do the 4x4. Need to save, don't. You will use that 4x4 less then u think. You will wish u had the 4x4 when u need it. Do what drives you and makes u happy.

All I'll say is the one time you need 4X4, you really need 4X4. Most of the time you never use it and it is just a switch on the dashboard, and most situations are manageable without it. I try to not use it when driving in the snow and in winter in general.

But god damn, that one time you NEED to use it, its worth its weight in gold.

    Snow?

There's a reason you won't find a Prerunner in New England.

justify it how you want, but fact is, 2wd vehicles are sold new in "winter weather" areas. Like I stated above, physics are physics, whether you have 2,4,6,18 wheels
