Same here. I got my mom a food dehydrator because she's into gardening and preserving and some specialty loose-leaf teas. Got my dad kind of a mixed bag of random hand tools I know he needs, some bourbon, some ammo, etc.

My brother in law and I are are going to build a shed for my dad's new tractor. Getting my mom a gift cert to this quilting store she likes. Mother in law is getting a handheld vaccum thing to help with dog hair cleanup, and father law is getting some new headphones to use while at the gym

Morning all. Spent most of last night at Boston Children's hospital. Pro tip: don't let your toddler run with Christmas decorations...

We were unpacking Christmas stuff and our daughter grabbed one of those fake candles you put in your window for the holidays and took off running with it. Obviously she tripped and the pointy end of the "flame" caught her cheek and did a number on her face. Decided to go into Children's cause they always have a plastic surgeon on, and with the gash being on her face we obviously want to minimize scarring. Ended up with 10 stiches.

    How was everyone elses weekend?

OUCH. DAMN. What did they say about scarring and how it'll look in the future?

Doesn't matter, she'll still be much prettier than Seth.

Glad she's ok, though. Could have been much worse!

They said they'll be one, but didn't say much more than that. Fortunately it was a pretty clean slice, so it shouldn't be bad. They didn't make it sound bad and said the orientation was favorable to how the gave naturally wrinkles when talking, etc.. So it should be minimal.

That's also why we went all the way to children's and had a plastic surgeon see her not just the regular ER attending at the local ER. He put in more stiches than she needed to hopefully help with scarring.
    true story. Thanks.

Now I'm home with her since the wife is traveling this week trying to make sure she doesn't pick the stiches out of her face. Should be a fun week

Wind the vitamin E to that scar while it's healing and it'll help a LOT with minimizing its appearance. I have one on my forehead just above my eyebrow that was NOT a clean cut, and vitamin E helped to keep it pretty much invisible. The only time it really shows up is when I tan up during the summer.

Good point. My wife and I didn't even put up ours this year. We got one of those little ones that goes on top of furniture, and put up a few ornaments on it. Wouldn't be the same without at least a tiny tree. my little guy is a little over a yeah and a half, so as you know, he likes to grab just about anything he can get his hands on.

Good idea. Didn't even think about that. Great advice!

Wow Seth. I hope She's OK. Good call on going to the Children's hospital. When my oldest son was 3 and Justin was 1 at the time was chasing him around and he tripped (we had an oriental rug on the carpet), he hit his head right below his eye brow on the side of the entertainment and it opened it right up. Brought him to Mass General and they did the same thing they had a plastic surgeon stitch his eye. I'll be honest there is a scar but it's not bad at all. The area that his happened to is very thin so they told us it might never go away.

We don't either. We were literally just unpacking stuff and she grabbed one of the candle things and took off like a bat out of hell only to trip like 5ft later.

Another option to help minimize scarring is Lavender essential oil. Apparently it works even better than vitamin E, but it's harder to find. I've never used it myself, but have heard they use it for burn scars because it not only promotes rapid healing but acts as an antibacterial at the same time.

The worst this for it is the picking. You defiantly will have your hands full watching her making sure she's not touching it. You might want to get a large piece of gauze to make sure she can't get to it. How was she about the stitches?

    Damn Seth, glad she's OK.

All this talk about trying to keep a toddler from not touching their face made me wonder, would DCF come if you put a cone on your kid to keep them from picking at the stitches on their face?

There's a few butterfly bandages in it right now. She was good with the topical anesthetic, obviously hated getting the lidocaine shots. Then they gave her basically aerosol valium that made her almost drunk. For the first 8 or so stitches she went full toddler hulk and needed 3 nurses and a doc to hold her down+ plastic surgeon to do the stiches. After that the valium stuff finally kicked it + she was exhausted from trying to hulk off of the table and passed out. So she was pretty crazy for the most part.

Haha ya right they can't even keep track of high risk kids. Plus that's just being safe, nothing wrong there.

Would that be a cone like you put around a dogs neck or a traffic cone with eyes and nose/mouth hole cut out?

When my youngest was 3 he sliced his hand open pretty good, I remember the toddler hulk mode and the screaming when they had to stitch him up, it broke my heart!

Yeah it was the same way with Joshua except they didn't use anything but a local for the pain. After they tried to do the 1st one and saw his reaction they had him lay down, cross his arms across his chest and then they put a bed sheet over him and had 2 interns on both sides hold it down. They had called in a volunteer that had toys go in to distract him and play while they were stitching him up. It breaks your heart to see them go through that stuff but I was SUPER impressed with the staff at Mass General.
