4x4 you will not regret it. I would never ever own a truck without it

Of course being from the north, we know that. But the effort to piss off a Texan is overwhelming and took priority even at the expense of sounding real dumb.:fingerscrossed:

This is not so. When Audi made some of the first 4wd cars the rally cars had a lockable center differential. They found they never unlocked it so they deleted it to save weight. If anyone is concerned about handling it's rally drivers. My 4wds handle much better in snow & ice in 4wd than in 2wd. It's not a substitute for not going too fast however.

And push-button start, qi charger, heated seats, bsm, automatic climate control, etc. All of those are only avaialble on the TRD trim (or limited). Therefore, if you want them, you either have to get a Sport or OR. If you don't like the scoop, the OR it is.

So I guess it is less about people getting a OR in 2wd, and more that Toyota is forcing them to get the OR version to get the options. That makes sense.

I rather pay the extra few grand ( which you will get a percentage back on the back end when you sell) then rely on a tow, seems like weird thinking to me. I mean come on man, you are cool with your backup being a tow service?

You would get a percentage back until you have a hefty repair bill on that drivetrain. Yes I am ok with tow bill being a backup. For the one time I might get stuck, 200 bucks is cheaper than 3-4K. I know the destinations I travel to, and if I find myself in a sketchy situation, I am smart enough to get my ass out of harms way until I can proceed.

Hefty repair? , We own Tacoma's right, arguably the most reliable power-train on the damn road ( granted shit happens but your repair bill argument doesn't hold much water).

The OP is planning on going skiing and camping almost a dozen times a year and people on here are recommending a 4X2 to save what amounts to a few hundred a year. Penny wise pound foolish, but to each is own. Enjoy your 4X2, but I'm willing to guess that one day he will need or wish he had the 4X4 and think back to this thread and curse all those saying to get the 4X2, but then again maybe he can call you to get him a tow.

4x4 is a luxury. Kinda like power windows and such. Do you need it? Prolly not. Is it nice to have? Yup.

Having driven thousands of off road miles...........

4x4 will get you further into areas so that when you get stuck, you're more fun to rescue.

A well shod and driven 4x2 will out perform a poorly driven 4x4, even with decent tires. I took a lot of engineers lunch money by driving further in 2wd than they could in 4wd before we both got stuck.

In terms of snow/ice, stopping is more important than going, in terms of safety. 4wd doesn't help. That's why it's called 'drive', not 'stop'. Proper winter tires do both.

All that sets the stage for..............

If I drove off road in the right conditions, or drove frequently in snow/ice conditions, I'd have 4wd AND an extra set of wheels with winter tires. Just having 4wd does not a winter survivor make.

Only you can analyze your real need.

Aren't there a bunch of issues with noises and loose parts in the front of many 4wd trucks? I thought I read something about people putting their trucks in 4wd hi to see if a noise goes away and if it does there is something loose or some other issue? Correct me if I am wrong but that is a repair bill that wouldn't happen on a 2wd truck...

When he says skiing or camping he most likely isn't talking about back country remote skiing or camping. Most likely established camp sites and a drive on the plowed road to the ski resort (how many cars do you see at those places?). 4wd isn't necessary for most those situations.

I've been to some ski resorts that make you stop unless you have 4wd and make you take a shuttle. Now of course it's not that big of a deal if you're a fan of wasting time.

Ya 4X4 doesn't give more traction at all, that's why there are so many 2wd Rock crawlers

That's the point. You live in DFW and have different needs than the OP does. Sounds like the OP would be utilizing 4WD much more often than you based on what he plans on doing with the truck.
