I'm at 92k miles. The only additional effort 4WD creates for me are two more zerks to grease when I change the oil...

In fact, the hubs/bearings for 4WD models are cheaper so that saved me money over a 2WD.

Only thing I have ever heard of with any regularity on a stock Toyota 4x4 is the ADD actuator failing, but even then it's usually a bad electrical connection issue and an essentially free fix if you know what you are doing.

That kind of thinking is akin to not buying a vehicle new enough to have an ECU or fuel injection because "it's just more expensive stuff to go wrong."

Ha ha ha , if you are equating the average driver with a rally driver who reveres rear end kick out as a way of inducing oversteer, you might have a point.....many years ago. We are talking about th average driver who thinks a Camry handles well and this happens unexpectedly for them. Rally drivers drive with the expectation this will happen then use it to their advantage.

Plus, you are comparing 4 wd to 2 wd.....not modern AWD. Do you have one ?
A locking mechanism saves Weight. It must have been one old car with everything made from cast iron for that to be worth while.

Is it trolling if you admit to doing it ? Regardless, it's good to have people here with a sense of humor. Enjoy the sunshine...send a little our way of you can. Enjoyed Texas very much when stationed there.

4X4--by far no question--once you have one--you never go back to 2 wheel drive.

I think if 4x4 didn't give more traction, they wouldn't bother producing 4x4 vehicles lol. Some of the arguments are pretty entertaining though

You keep stating this...but neglect to say what physics you are referring to. You're thinking about ONE variable, the coefficient of friction. Yes, driving on ice, the coefficient of friction is drastically reduced, but it's not zero. Assuming no lockers or LSD, while accelerating from a stop in 2wd you are literally relying on the static friction of one tire. In 4wd with a locked center differential, you're relying on the static friction of two tires, one in front, one in rear. In addition, the static friction up front is increased due to the weight of the engine. Static friction is defined as
Fs=μs * Fn where Fs is static friction, μs is the coefficient of static friction and Fn is the normal force. If you assume the coefficient of friction of "ice" on all drive tires are the same, the front tires have a larger Static Friction because it has more weight up front. Normal force (Fn) is mass * gravity. The more mass...the more friction. Add in a rear locker, you now have the static friction of three tires. Add in a front locker, now have the static friction of 4 tires. You add the static friction of all drive tires together, not a constant of a single tire.

It's not complicated. I've got ice on the roads 4 months out of the year. When I leave my house, if my rear tires are just spinning, I stop and turn on 4wd, and then pull on my merry way.

But please...go on about this "physics are physics."

I was hoping someone would give the engineering based response.

In all seriousness I think a 2 wheel drive truck would work fine for you OP. You wont have trouble camping. You might run in to problems depending on where you ski and how much snow is on the ground. However, I doubt ice and snow are too big of a concern for you in California.

I'm 5 minutes from California and I've got over 30" of snow in the last 4 days :notsure:

California is an amazing state weather wise but not so amazing when you realize it's size and location. Just saying "I'm from California" is like me saying, "I am from the entire eastern seaboard. "

Not a clue, but if his trips warrant having a 4 wheel drive vehicle, he should by all means go for it. It is my experience that most driving in California does not require 4 wheel drive, rather a bed mounted 50 caliber machine gun, to defend yourself against the hoards of terrible drivers.
