As someone who is a 95% buyer I always assume a bit of risk when buying something from a complete stranger. Fortunately every transaction was completed (even skygear's eventually).

That said regarding "post count" thresholds. Can't someone just post a lot in a BS thread or completely unrelated thread just to reach the benchmark? The trextrd guy had over 1000 posts.

I used to be on a Subaru Legacy forum and they had a rating system. For every positive transaction there were points awarded. The system accommodated for both buyers and sellers. I think that is also a viable option.

It's called iTrader and it is very much like ebay's rating system.

 

Here's screen shot. The total rating is listed under the member's avatar when in thread view. That is the member's iTrader rating.
