Well not necessarily a new member, but its been awhile since I've been on the site. I recently sold my 2004 Single cab 2.7 which I regret and picked up a 2003 Xtra Cab 3.4 TRD Pre runner with 47,000 miles. Yup you heard that right 47K. Not a single spot of rust anywhere literally. Chalk marks are still on the frame from the factory.. Apparently it has been a 3 owner and I'm the 4th the last owner used it as a third vehicle driving it about only 800 miles a year for the last few years. Factory equipped with the locker. Plans are to install a 3 inch lift and ditch the camper top and step bars, bug shield and all the old man equipment..

I'm new to the 3.4 world having had numerous 20/ 22R and 3RZ trucks I have a few questions. Are these motors really this loud? The previous owner # 2 said the timing belt was changed at 28,000 miles due to it sitting a lot, so apparently thats done..Coming from my last truck "3RZ" it wasn't as loud as far as engine noise. I keep hearing what sound like a "pulley" bearing with no grease rattling. I've almost got it narrowed down to the water pump area behind the dust cover, but have not pulled it apart to confirm.

    Is this a common problem?
Maybe the previous shop installed the factory water pump back in due to the miles after the belt change?
Maybe its a lifter or the cams are out of sync? Valves? Its not running hot, no power loss, no check engine lights, etc etc..

Here is a quick picture of my old and new new as well as a video of the engine noise.Looking forward to the build and getting back into the life style. It took me forever to find another 1st gen I liked. I'm just not a fan of the 2nd or 3rd.

Ha, old man comment meaning just not my style. Thanks guys. I guess the video doesn't do the sound justice or maybe I'm just used to a 4 cylinder..? Honestly sounds exactly like a bearing that has no geese and it's spinning on metal to metal..

Grey wire and keyless entry. I like stock.
Good find! I live in Murfreesboro. PM me if you ever want to go down to Lewisburg and play at Woolys. My 3.4 has over 200k and runs tops. Still pulls a 16 ft hd trailer at 70 just fine too. Really surprisingly strong little trucks.

it's difficult to really say since i can't hear the motor with my own ears. some of those noises are natural with time. some noises in the video sounded like very dry clicking! as in, no oil. id say look into some engine flushes and oil changes. and i mean do an oil change a month with moderate driving. 2 of these at least. and use something like mobil 1 or K&N oil filters. they have the best filtration rates ( 99%) in the market with OE being only 94%. if you can get the advice of some porsche level technicians or better, do it. see what they say.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Mine's always had a growl to it like that. Just sounds normal to me or it could be my really rusted out exhaust haha but as long as it's running right and still making power, I wouldn't worry too much.

Badass truck Price 168. Night and day difference from the stock look. How much you have in the lift/wheels/tires? I need to do that to my 2000 I just picked up. Unbelievable with 47k. Mint score. Here I thought I did good with 108k.
