What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

I know, you were just saying something about the rear locker too, so that's why I added that part

 

4WD engages and works though!

Used it to pull and winch a F-250, pulled it out of the yard and winched it onto the trailer.

 

I'll interested in hearing if pulling and cleaning the sensor plug makes any difference for you.

FWIW, since I regeared, my red diff lock like never goes solid, even tho the locker does lock the diff.

What I've noticed is there are actually two blink speeds on mine. It's a slow blink (about once/second) when the locker is fully engaged and a faster blink (about 2-3 blinks/second) when the button is first pressed but the locker hasn't yet fully engaged. Here is the process. Click the diff lock button, the red diff lock light begins to blink. When the locker engages, the blink slows down.

I am curious if you see something similar.

 

Funny you say that! It is a slow blink!

 

Mine has 2 blink speeds also, slow blink when engaging at low speeds and if you exceed 5MPH while its trying to engage it blinks faster.
But my light also goes solid when locked (with grey wire mod)

I am hoping it is only a sensor thing as Ryan suggested. Why I am curious if cleaning it will have an impact. Mines been doing this for 2 years now. Noticed it immediately after the regear. I don't think it is a coincidence.

It could also be a locker motor position thing. It could be the locker motor is not turning far enough to fully engage the sensor, yet far enough to engage the locker.

I am never going over 5 mph when I engage. No grey wire mod.

 

Maybe yours just isn't plugged in all the way lol! If it was pulled apart and unplugged you know?! But I don't have the truck yet! Sometime in the next week it will be in my driveway and I will start looking into everything! I will have them put it on the lift and put it in 4wd and lock the diff and test it while I am there cuz if the 4wd drive is having problems it could be a deal killer!

 

Lol it'll do for the time being! (as in the next 10 years or so till I can put money into it after I graduate lol)

Its a fibre/rubber gasket, at least the one in the ATP kit is. A little trick i always do with these is take RTV Silicone on my fingers (gloved hand) and spread a thin layer of the RTV on both sides of the gasket, completely covering it. This will prevent any possible leaks from imperfect surfaces, and not make a mess of excess silicone pressing out when tightening.
I first started doing this years ago when doing oil pan and timing cover gaskets on 5 and 3 series BMWs. I had two come back from seeping oil. The OEM gaskets are just a rubberized metal stamping, not the best for aluminum covers that warp over time. Ive never had anything leak again when i do this with the silicone.

I should tell you it took two days longer then it should have. I was sent the wrong filter kit. Amazon shows kit B-101 is for a 2000 Tacoma 2.7L with A340E transmssion.

Some Tacomas like mine have a 30-40LE transmission. Is almost identical to a A340 internally, but the first gear is higher, and the filter is different.

The proper kit has three outlet ports as seen here removed in the pan.

The proper kit is ATP B-168 or Beck Arnley 044-0293. It will say its for a Aisin A341E, not A340E, at least on Amazon it says this.

Wow thanks! Yeah I'm going to do it to an A340F not E. From what I read they are longer. I'll look into it tho. Thanks again guys for the info. It's helpful.

 

The A340F is just the 4wd version of the A340E tranny. The 30-40LE seems to cross-reference to the A341E, which was more common in Sequoias and the Lexus GS and RX. There is a A341F (4wd version) though from what I can tell it wasn't used on Tacomas.

Just be sure you get the right kit before starting. Luckily my parts counter, bmaparts.com, can get items same day most of the time.
