Installing the OEM one today. I like the fact that the mounts install with a nut inside, which should make those more secure. As I already have a bed mat, I'm debating if I should raise the install height slightly so that it's level in the position I'll have it most - flipped inside the bed vs extended.

Is there bed extenders for the 2016 tacoma yet? Or do the 2015 extenders fit the 16s?

I'm very sorry Mr crzycav86, I didn't make it clear that we don't have 3 Gen new Tacoma, ours is a 2014 :(. Sorry !

I also didn't say that with the cover we have, it kinda holds the trucks back door and because the cover has a lock we have a huge waterproof trunk but it also locks. To me, this helps make the externder thingie that much more useful :).

Yes, they are using the older extenders for the '16 Tacoma.

I'm almost 100% sure it's the same part #. I paid $200 from the dealer, which I think is close to invoice price.

I can't believe the new extenders are so small. They only take up a third of the tailgate area! Glad I got one of these OG ones from AMP before they went all sissy.

It is not water-tight... whether or not it is supposed to be by design is another question. Several members here have posted their findings after experimenting with rain and garden hose, the results are that water will find its way in... even if it is just a small amount. If you want a water-tight option you may have to go aftermarket.

Unfortunately, AMP Research no longer makes this model. They switched to a version with less parts and less capacity.
I keep an eye out for folks selling the old-style ones on Craigslist, I got mine BNIB for $100 a few years ago.

I just bought an AMP Research Rectangular Extender in Black off of eBay for $195. The seller had it listed for $219 with free shipping, but I offered $195 and they accepted. FYI.

was thinking about buying a bed extender myself. first truck let alone even knowing much about them other than the obvious purpose. question is do people only have them in when in use or can the stay in at all times? didn't know if the are locked in while the tailgate is also locked and can only be removed when gate is lowered. thanks for any info in advance.

I find them to be in the way more often than performing an actual function. But I do like the fact they help contain gear while transporting with the tailgate down (motorcycle)

Yes, they are relatively locked in as you have to open the tailgate to rotate the extender to it's removal position.

I installed the bed extender before I put in the OEM bed mat and didn't make any difference. I wouldn't stress it.
