So, I have this option on getting the new tacoma, or waiting on the new Hilux.

I have owned a tacoma in the past and loved it. I have honestly no idea on how to go about this, but will be going to Europe for awhile and wouldn't mind bringing over Hilux over to the states. Suggestions would be great!

check your import laws before you consider that.
Not sure for US but in Canada over seas vehicle has to be 15 years or older to bring over.

You don't have as much of a decision to make as you think you do. You won't be bringing a Hilux back to the states.

Unless "going to Europe for awhile" means you'll be there for 25 years you aren't buying a Hilux new and bringing it back with you. You won't be getting a non-NA spec vehicle licensed in the states illness it's that old or rare enough to qualify for show-and-display exemption.

This ^^. I'm sure many of us have been down this road and it always ends in impossible. About the only feasible way to even drive one temporarily here is to keep it as a Mexican truck and you can get an annual pass for some kind of reason. Not worth the hassle. They will smash it at the port if you even got one here.

On a side note, the TPP was supposed to have some provision for getting rid of the chicken tax and other inhibitors to this over a period of years. Never heard if that made it into the final deal or not.

doesn't the vehicle also need to have very limited production to qualify for that?

america sucks for importing though haha. I thought Canada was bad at least for us its 15 years and thats it. can be imported. But good luck getting insurance on a RHD vehicle here

which is why getting a GTR R34 is impossible there and the R32 just became legal, yet its been legal here for 10 years already.

But supposedly there's 4 VW Amarocks in North america because of that mexico loophole.

But then again I guess with the right amount of money you could get anything here.
After all the Pagani Zonda is illegal in canada yet I've seen one on the road here a few times. With the right amount of money anything can be legal.

That's right, don't recall the actual number though so I just went with 'rare'. There's also a really low annual yearly milage cap on S&D imports, less than 2500 miles per year IIRC.

I remember hearing once that it has to be under 500 produced. So ya Hilux is definitely out haha.
Could be wrong though. I'm north so I am much more familiar with the canadian import laws.

One can never have too many light bars.
Hilux won't adhere to US emission or crash safety standards. So even if you somehow manage to get it over here good luck getting it registered.

I see a brand-spanking-new white Hilux cruising around HB on a weekly basis.
It sports Mexican tags. I don't get the allure of the Hilux, but then the one running around here is a 2wd, stock belly-flopper.

It isn't that they won't adhere, just that they haven't been tested to exact US standards. The manufacturer has no incentive to perform a different series of test when they have a comparable line in the US., and even with emissions met, the diesel will never get into the market as long as their is a 25% tax added on.

The allure is a small truck with 1 ton payload, that does everything a small truck should on and off road with good mpgs. They were never about being cool looking, just functional. You can easily see over the hood going off-road.
. You can still get a very functional truck like this:[IMG]
It's not for everyone, but as far as doing real truck things in a small package, not just chasing tail, you can't beat it.

Funny, the government will not let a harmless low carbon emitting pickup into the country, but an angry young muslim male from a terrorist hotbed is being inclusive. "Death to practical pickups!"
