I've got the 2.7L and can't remember after 3 1/2 years, using it 7 times. My concern was always the possibility of stripping the threads. Of course this is brass so I assume the brass would give first. Other option if you don't like that valve, is something to suck the oil out through the oil dipstick tube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utZpZWYWqiQ

That's what I did, except it was every 8000 km 4 times, plus one tire rotation; then switched to Mobil 1 synthetic on my own.

They hit me up for $19.95 for a drive shaft inspection and lube on the second oil change. They also tried to ding me for a scheduled rear brake inspection and adjustment on the last one (42,000 kms) for a mere $289.99 when my truck was on the lift. I was with my buddy at the service counter when the rep tried the upsell by telling me that it was mandatory according to the manual. This was the same rep that couldn't find (and didn't know of) the oil service & maintenance record on page 27 of the Owners Manual Supplement. I literally laughed so hard that I hurt my sides. I did apologize. It was about that time that the tech came out from the garage to ask who had done all of the awesome upgrades to the truck. I told her that all was good in the world and that I could take care of the brakes by myself, and record it.

BTW, they cross-threaded the drain plug. I rechased the drain hole and installed a Fumoto valve.

I like the idea of marking stuff before the oil change is done at the dealership and checking over things once it's done at the dealership but that time you spent marking stuff before the oil change and checking it after could be spent doing the oil change yourself and not even having to drive to the dealership and waste your time.

I have a 05 Tacoma and had changed all my fluids 6 months ago. Brake fluid, deferential, power steering, antifreeze all myself. They called me in for a frame rust inspection. Guess what, they told me my frame is ok but I need a complete replacement of all my fluids! In the car industry Service Centers are called Revenue Centers. aalindsey.biginside.jpg

No you can not use Toyota's, or any other reputable shop's equipment. It's a huge insurance liability.

Use what the manual recommends for oil OP.

Yeah that's what I figured but what about the free oil and filter? Will they give it to you and let you put it in yourself?

Highly unlikely for a variety of reasons. Basically if you want it free they do it, otherwise it's on your own dime and organizational skills to show proof you completed all work on time and as per the manual should a warranty issue arise.

I been using this for the last 5000 miles in 5w30. The taco seems to like it, very smooth and quiet idle. I haven't done a test but I like it and would use it again.

For those speaking of ToyotaCare (free service for the first 25k mi / 2yrs whichever comes first), found @ https://ssl.toyota.com/owners/parts-service/toyota-care
Please correct me but it looks like oil changes are only at 10k and 20k mi.
Unless of course the service is coming directly from your dealer?

Glad I still have my oil changing gear/tools. Thinking of changing myself at 5k and 15k .
Do you think it matters if I change after or before taking it to the dealer for the ToyotaCare service?

Walmart and occasionally Amazon. With Amazon you have to be lucky cause most of the time it's almost 50 dollars.

Toyota Care is also included for GST. It also is good for any dealership, not just the one you bought from

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Toyota doesn't make their own oil, oil filters, or antifreeze so use what feels best to you. When it comes to oil, I'm sure they buy out to from the lowest bidding refinery, have it bottled, and then slap their label on it. I'd personally go with Mobil 1 myself, they are a proven name, have been around for a very long time and are the factory fill on many new vehicles so what does that tell you, engineers choose Mobil 1, so run it with confidence! :)

I will NEVER NOT mark equipment before going into maintenance. Honda just screwed me so hard on tire rotation/filter change. Then I went to a local garage and they did the same thing. Nobody ever does what you pay them to do these days.

Toyota oil (or TGMO Toyota Genuine Motor Oil) is supplied by Mobil. Reportedly it is not Mobil 1, but similar with a less good anti-wear additive package. Whether or not it would run 500k miles with no difference from Mobil 1? Who knows.:notsure:

    I like Mobil 1.

You get tire rotations at 5000, 10000, 15000, 20000 and 25000 miles but the oil changes are at 10000 and 20000 miles. The Toyota OCI is 10,000 miles so you will only get two free oil changes. On my 2014 Camry, I did my own oil changes at 5000 and 15,000 miles. Now I do an oil change and tire rotation at 7500 mile interval.

I'm sure this question has been asked but can't seem to find it on Tacomaworld.

Almost time for my first oil change.
What brand of oil are other 2016 Tacoma owners going with?
I'm thinking of going with the Mobil 1 advanced fuel economy 0w-20w. Also see the Mobil 1 makes an extended performance 0w-20w oil. Any recommendations on which Mobil 1 I should go with?
Or just go with the Toyota's brand?
