From Cold air intake to Deck plate mod

So about 3 months ago, I bought a K&N CAI off a buddy of mine for really cheap and intalled it my self.





and for a while I was pretty happy with it. It sounded really agressive and deep but I never really noticed any power gains at all but I am also no expert. As far as fuel economy goes there was no change what so ever. I know the majority on tacomaworld are against cold air intakes and I had actually bought the materials to do the deckplate mod about two weeks before getting the CAI but never got around to doing it. So with my deckplate and old air box just sitting on the floor, I decided to put it together.




Since I had read multiple good reviews and at least one dyno sheet praising the results of the deckplate mod, I decieded to give it a try. Also I had kinda gotten tired of the constant sound of the K&N intake even while cruising.

Overall I am leaning towards the deckplate mod over the K&N intake. Its quieter but still noticable once you give it some throttle. Its the same if not better throttle response then the CAI. And its $200 cheaper. As far as fuel economy goes I havent had it in long enough to see yet but ill post it later. So if your on the fence between a CAI and the deckplate mod, I would sugest definatly trying the Deckplate first and saving your money, but thats just MHO.

what size deck plate is that..???

 

Nice Work. I noticed on mine it didn't get loud until I took the silencers off. There's no power to be gained by removing them, just noise.

I've never driven my truck with a dp mod on it but I bought a Injen CAI about 4 months ago and I LOVE it! My MPG shot up by 2, the throttle response was MUCH more noticeable, and most importantly, THE SOUND IS INCREDIBLE!

 

i just removed the elbow from the intake, the silencers and added a fram ground hog (or whatever its called), the truck is way more responsive now.

 

thankx peeps.. i ordered a 4" and i'm gunna try this mod out... i have been searching on the forums but i cannot find a picture of the elbow or the silencers that people are removing..... is there a thread on it.. ???

 

its on the left of the intake box going into the passenger fender. not sure if your 4 banger has it.

 

i've read that this is just as effective as the deck plate and it completely reversible, which is nice

 

deck plate mod is pretty easy.. believe it or not.. the truck is more responsive. thankx peeps. i removed the elbow and the silencers too.. nice...

 

Will a Snap in Deck plate work? has anyone tried it? It seems like it would be less secure. I have a 4cl 2009 tacoma and have seen that it would be hard to fit a 4" deck plate on the air box, but I cant find any screw in deck plates that are 3"

 

Where can I buy a Deckplate mod?

just remove the 90 bolted to the inside of the fender, cut off the back side where it bends so its no longer a 90, then reinstall and you have finished the 90 mod and it works just as good as the deck plate mod but its better because it stays open and stays clean all the time.

with the deck plate mod, you have to put the plate back on to play in the mud

 

From my experience, the stock box is always the best option. Cold air intakes just suck in hot air from your engine bay. I suppose if you had it routed somewhere else you may see some hp gains? But intakes are just a sham to make your car sound "cool."

 

i have a stupid question. i'm kinda new to Tacoma world, but do you keep the cover on the deck plate or do u take it off when you drive? thanks!

 

You take it off when you drive, water crossing put it in and keep your fingers crossed haha
