Unions can be both good and bad. Sometimes they just make things more expensive, sometimes they save workers asses.

I can tell you that labor cost makes up less than 5% of the total cost of one of the machines I help to build, along with over 130 others. I don't build Tacomas, however.

My Tacoma was actually made in the Tesla factory (sort of). In the 2010 model year, Toyota transferred Tacoma production from the NUMMI plant in Freemont (joint operation with G.M. which was the inspiration for the movie "Gung Ho" when it re-opened as such), to the plant in Texas where the Tundras were at the time (and might still be?) in the process of closing NUMMI after GM backed out during the bailout. Couple years later, Tesla started making their stuff in that factory but with a new staff (amazing they've managed to keep UAW out since all the experienced auto workers in that area would have been historically union members).

In that area, probably the way they're maintaining a non-union plant is to treat their workers very well; in my experience with unions (especially when AFL-CIO is involved), the union officials/organizers actually consider companies treating non-union workers well as a more reprehensible policy than mistreating employees of any sort.

If you read history there are a lot of good things regarding unions. See how labour was treated before them. BUT like any large organization there can be issues that creep in over time.

There are no gray areas in life. everything is black and white. You are either with us, or a fucking commie terrorist. And a homo street racer too.

One of my problems with unions: They (generally) force all employees to be compensated the same regardless of their performance. Equality is not always a good thing. Very, very glad I am not in one.
