    It does say a lot.
Good employers are hard to come by. Good employers likely have content employees who don't need unions.
Not everyone is a good employer though.

Glad it's working out well for you.
Glad to hear Toyota treats their employees well. Another bonus for being a long time Toyo fan.

i work for a unionized telecom company. theres a big difference in my industry between having representation and not. i dont understand why labor unions are constantly under attack for a companies poor performance and mis management. Blame the greedy CEOs for putting share holders before customers. getting back on topic i buy what i like...

I don't shun foreign parts or things, but if I have a choice I'll buy an American made product over a foreign one whenever possible. Can't do shit about shoes or clothes, but I've bought multiple appliances and other expensive items with that being a critical (but not only) factor. We all "draw the line" in a different part of the sand, but for me I'd like to have final assembly of my vehicles in the US. I don't want to spend $5 for a $0.05 part so I have no problem sending small parts and assemblies overseas. And I don't care that Toyota is a Japanese brand. But I like final assembly in the US. Not because I think Mexico can't make a good product. They can and Toyota ensures that. But because I like my neighbors to have jobs too...

I love my sixth new Tacoma/Hilux. I buy these vehicles because of their reliability, value and attention to quality.

Manufacturing locations and staffing models (UAW, contract, temp, non-union, etc...) are internal business decisions by the manufacturers. I just want a great product.

The Texas plant that builds the Tacoma's now is in San Antonio..(Home of the Spurs..!!.)....where the Tundra's are being built. They are not unionized...and they like it that way. I was hired there for the start up...worked there for about 2 years. They have 90% of their suppliers located around the main manufacturing plant....kinda like in a horse shoe pattern....very well thought out process. They run a swing shift...2 weeks on days...2 weeks on nights...and that includes their supplier's workers as well.
Once the Tacoma line started up there...they hired alot more people and expanded by 50%.
The whole set up is huge....they call it Toyota City...they have their own police (security), their own fire department and paramedics. They even have a medical building that houses an emergency clinic that has doctors, and also an eye doctors and dentists. Their thought is that if any employee needs anything medically..they can go there and then get back to work.

And here is a true fact about one of the main reasons they came down to Texas to build trucks.....when Toyota was thinking about either building the plant here in San Antonio or in another state...the city reps here took them on a plane trip to Dallas TX on a Sunday...and drove them around the Texas Stadium parking lot and they were amazed about how many trucks were there...rolls and rolls of them. That just about convinced them.

Agreed. Every state should be a right-to-work state. Being required to join a union (or pay into one, as the case may be) as a condition of employment is absurdity.

I'm also really impressed that this thread hasn't gone off the deep end with people bickering at each other.

    Unions...:annoyed:

Unions are the main reason why we have NAFTA and companies have their products made with cheap labor in Mexico and take jobs away from Americans.

    You may fire when ready...:crapstorm:

My wife works for Toyota (TMMC), as do about 5 other family members/friends and everyone complains just about work... but when you speak to them honestly, they say a lot of good about Toyota and how they are treated. Union has tried almost each year to get in, and continues to get voted away. Also true on the no lay offs situation while the economy took a massive deuce.
I work on the dealer side of things... so while not a part of Toyota, but just a franchise selling Toyota's, they treat us well and with respect. (Product Advisor)

This may not be just because of the lack of a union, but how the culture of Toyota is instilled. While making a profit, you can still keep your customers and employees comfortable and secure.
People make up everything... have shitty people up top, you'll get shitty people down below.

    I guess I'll throw in 2 cents...

There was a time when unions were needed. There were very few labor laws in place to protect workers from unsafe working conditions and exploitive management. But today we have plenty, probably too many laws in place and government regulatory agencies in place to take care of these problems.

In my opinion, and in their current form, unions are mainly in place to defend weak and underperforming workers in order to collect their dues. They also extort above-market pay rates and benefits from employers so they can collect more dues. These dues are used so the union leadership can lead a luxurious life off of the workers they claim to represent, and then they funnel the rest of their money to the Democratic Party to help keep this racket in place. Today's labor unions are sacrificing job security and our national manufacturing competitiveness in order to put money into their own pockets, and they are a major reason why many jobs have been sent outside this country.

In my opinion, their time has passed and their declining membership numbers seem to back this up.
