Anyone ever try Pliny the Elder? I just picked up two bottles after hearing it's one of the best IPA's around. Opinions on it or equally good IPA's?

pliny the elder is AMAZING! russian river is one of my favorite breweries. Blind Pig is another one of their beers and it is also great. And they make a few sours that rock! I drove from San Diego to San Fran just to go to their brew pub and also to laguintas. If you havnt tried them, you should. Their IPA is amazing. And they have a beer called brown shugga that is to die for!!

Oh I know all about Lagunitas. Their whole line up is amazing. I really like there Lagunitas Sucks (Brown Shugga Substitute) right now. The guy at the liquor store was talking about Sculpin India Pale Ale being just on par with Pliny. I should have picked up a bottle, but stupidly passed on it. http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/199/29619

sculpin is good. im not a huge ballest point fan. I really like green flash and stone, of course lol. Dogfishhead is amazing too. I home brew also, im a hop head! anything with cascade or simcoe im down for!

not sure what your stores carry, but rough draft is another great small brewery here in SD, and they are amazing too. Mission IPA is great with sushi. Stone 16th anniversary ale is awesome. Its 10% but you cant even tell!

Keep an eye out for El Segundo Brewery. They have a wit IPA called White Dog that's awesome. Every beer they brew is good.

Pliny is good and I usually buy bottles on Friday's locally. I prefer Lagunitas to anything RRB produces.

Pliny is good, unless you get it from one of the shops that hides it in back and its over a month old.

Swami's from Pizza Port Brewing is a great ipa and much easier to get a hold of.

I've had Pliny the Elder once at the girl and the fig in Sonoma. super delicious and flowery. Will make a pilgrimage come February for Pliny the Younger. I've had the grapefruit sculpin and have found it overhyped. It is a solid IPA, but "everyone" says it's the best IPA out there.. It most certainly isn't. Laguinitas is my go-to IPA. Love their entire line-up.

I've had Pliny several times over past yrs and it is solid including there "Pliny the Younger".I do believe there are better brews out there though.I can understand and relate though when someone hasn't tried it yet that there anxious when that chance occurs!A treat and definetly not disapointing!

Pliny = good, but overrated IMHO. If you like balanced IPA's, try any of Beachwood Brewing's IPA's! Bottle distribution is limited, so you're lucky (like I am) if you live close by to Long Beach or Seal Beach, CA. Cheers!

I like Knee deep hoptologist dipa and citra for light beer, plus it's local. Dogfish 90 minute is bomb but the 120 minute is fantastic! There's a pub near me that has pliny on tap typically, although I don't get the hype. It is a good iPA but nothing crazy.

Agreed on Pliny. AND as for Knee Deep, I'm a big fan of Lupulin River and Breaking Bud. Taaaaaaaaaaaaaaasty!

Pliny is always good but there are several California ipa's that I prefer. Kern River Citra, Noble's Mosaic showers and Citra showers. Ill still buy a bottle or two of Pliny every time I see it as long as its fresh tho.

I'm going to have to keep an eye out for this one. Is it a more pungent IPA or a floral?

Try this if you already haven't. Its AMAZINGLY sour and I love it!!!!

Give Booze Brothers a shot. Located in Vista CA. Beers are on par with the others listed in this thread. Prices are great. The brewery and employees are rad.
