This exposed material, this is picture of my frame right after I got it. Same paint defects as on 2016 picture
Dont know who said this is copper, whoever that was he is fully retarded.
Frames are TIG welded for strength, and TIG uses steel rods on steel. Heck even MIG welder uses steel. Nobody can weld steel with copper to make a strong joint, Those hoints being copper is probably most assine statement on this forum.
Spots with missing paint are bare metal.

Either way, I would like to keep my head out of the sand.

I wish I had this information before I bought my 2010. I've owned a lot of vehicles in my life and the only one that I ever saw rust on was my 1977 Civic with it's biodegradable sheet metal and my 1991 Cherokee which had a small bit of rust around one of the window sills. Not one vehicle Honda (3), Ford (never again due to mechanicals), GM, Jeep or Nissan had rust on the frame after 6 years and 70,000 kms.

Fair amount but not as bad as on the east coast. Spring is bad, the mufflers are falling off old vehicles left and right then!

Both the steel and the high strength steel should be a silver metallic color. I'm guessing the gold color may be zinc phosphate conversion coating. It would explain the gold color. It's shitty that the paint chips so easy, but I don't think that's exposing untreated steel beneath it. Although there's no telling how long that next layer will last under the elements.

"At one of its frame plants, MetoKote applies a zinc phosphate coating to steel car and truck frames as a pretreatment to the electro coating process. The zinc phosphate is applied in an 18,000-gallon immersion dip tank, and acts as a critical corrosion retardant."

Yup you are right that is why the dealers can't hardly give the trucks away. The best thing going for Dodge is their Cummings diesel. Not much else beyond that. Neighbour is on his third front end on his RAM. He is going GM gas truck this winter. Maybe the parts on the RAM are ok they just seem to need replacing faster than most.

our super duty can't keep front end parts under it. Plowing a our 2 office parking lots just ruins the driveline. We received over 8' of snow last winter, and it was hard on gear, but every year it needs a lot of new parts.

Front end parts or coolant/fuel system issues, pick your poison. All trucks have their issues.

I was going to respond to you yesterday. That was until I started researching the 1st Gen and 2nd Gen frame rust 'problem'. It's a compelling story that is not over. I'm probably going to post some things on the 2nd Gen Forum.

I don't know what Toyota offers Canadian Tacoma owners. The frame rust inspection is free in the U.S. If your frame is o.k., you might want to think about having the dealer (documents it was done) apply a rust preventative. Of all the stories I've read, the 2010 and up Tacoma's having frame rust problems are hard to find. Metalsa took over frame production in January 2011 from the Dana Corp., and their frames may be holding up, based on the dearth of complaints.

However, there is a recall on 2009 to 2010 Tacoma, Pre-Runner trucks for "fractured leaf springs" due to stress or corrosion.

Drove to our local dealership to look at a Rav4 for my wife today and this 16' Colorado LT Crew Cab 2wd was just traded in. 1555 miles and they want $31990!

I feel like I'm old when I look at these prices. AND IM ONLY 32! My first new vehicle, a 08' Nissan Frontier Crew Cab SE 4x4 I paid $18900. Kept it for almost 8 years and sold it for $18000. Almost had a stroke when I paid 37k for my Taco. Then I see a used, albeit like new, truck for $32k.

How long does it take for them to do a frame change over?
I'm guessing quicker than the leaf springs I'm waiting on.

I really think both are great trucks, and it's really hard to bash either one.
    Owner satisfaction from CR:

Don't understand a poor rating from CR for the Coloardo with all of their sub ratings indicating something else:

Resale value argument becoming a moot point (KBB 2016 resale value awards):
