Had a buck come running in on me today. Didn't have time to glass him to see exactly how big he was. Thought he was a good 6, maybe small 8. Instead he's just a huge 4. Oh well. Property owners want as many shot as possible anyway because they won't stay out of their garden or crops. I'll give the horns back to the land owner. He makes pens and things out of them.

Guess I'm buying my meat for spaghetti this winter - I passed on too many does waiting for bucks, and the couple doe season hunts I had didn't pan out. I've shifted gears back to ducks - the warm weather means no freeze-up here for at least another ten days. Usually I'm breaking skim ice by now. Photo from this morning's foggy start.

It's been a weird waterfowl season here -- weather patterns, river flows, and bird behavior all conspiring to make it difficult. Last week Saturday with the river flowing a mighty 1300 cfs, it was gadwalls aplenty. Sunday, the theme switched to goldeneyes, both Barrow's and common on the same water. Today, with the water cut dramatically down to about 150 cfs and almost no wind, it was mostly dead after a lot of predawn flocks, circling a few times, but not coming in. I had a couple friends and a dog with and it was hard to conceal all the movement. I ended up with two. Overall, it was a few wigeon and single goldeneyes coming in hot and generally overflying the spread. I can't pursue tomorrow, but the holidays will be heavy on the duck hunting for me!

Tough season. Got 4 more today -- screwed up on the geese at first light. Nothing really coming into the decoys, but I know my decoys keep them low as they come up the river.

Weird and worst season for ducks ever here too. We just did not get them. I beleive they were stuck a couple hundred miles north where the weather was good all fall and when they moved they moved down south. The upside of this is that we were still fishing from boats on Christmas. When you get lemons....

Same down in so cal ducks have been hard, last season some of the ponds I would check would be full of ducks and now it only seems to be ruddy ducks. Hope we can get one final push at the end of the season but I doubt that

Really bad here in the Midwest too. I FINALLY get drawn for SD waterfowl while pheasant hunting there and the ducks stayed to the North. The joke I often heard this year was Canada let go of those ducks!! But sounds like it wasn't so great for many there either.

At the start of the season, I was cursing the Game and Fish for pushing the season start and end dates back 3 entire weeks. Now, I'm thinking they got it right. Things are picking up here a bit with wigeon, gadwall, green-winged teal, and greater canada numbers rising suddenly. However, the Army Corp. went from flowing 1300 cfs to near zero in my stretch of the river. Hard to decoy all those wigeon to slow water, though the gadwall and common goldeneyes are still decoying pretty well. We've still got to the end of January, and I'm getting out though the holidays pretty much every day -- guess that makes it a pretty darn good season after all!

Interesting. You use an over/under for ducks. I can't remember if I've seen that before. Cool.

I was just looking at that Don, your right. Not many people use a Browning round knob (Prince of Wales Grip) O\U for waterfowl. I have known a few and they were all deadly on the birds. And usually a class act to boot.

Well done Doug glad your making out OK, sure looks like it to me!
