So I am wondering if I have a problem with my transmission or engine. I have a 2005 DC TRD OR Auto with 28K miles.

After hard braking from say 50 mph to 0 mph (not squeeling the tires, but say a quick changing stoplight or someone cutting you off), I come to a complete stop but then there is a hard jerk forward after a second or two of stopping. It almost has the feeling as if you were towing something behind you, stop, and then you get rammed in the rear, the whole truck lurching forward.

Is this natural or do I have an issue?

It's hard to say what that is.... could be many things.

But I'm guessing in such an abrupt stop like that - it's probably Axle wrap.

When you brake hard like that, the rear leaf springs are unloading a bit as the front-end of the vehicle dives. After you come to a complete stop..... what you're feeling is the rear suspension going back to its 'resting' position (unwinding - so to speak).

    That's my guess...

Stiffer leaf springs do help with this - but.....again... I don't think you could ever brake THAT hard and not have some axle wrap.

Is your AC on? If so its just the "lurch" when the compressor kicks in.

Otherwise its axle wrap like Janster mentions above. Is the truck stock?

I have the same issue and always attributed it to axle wrap. I've had to learn not to do those hard stops. :)

The "bump" is different from when the A/C is on and almost feels as if the driveline is unloading. So many different opinions on the forums I gave up and learned to drive differently.

Since I tow a heavy trailer your description is almost spot on. Feels like your trailer kicks you after you come to a stop if the trailer brakes aren't adjusted correctly. BTW I added the Roadmaster Active Suspension to my rear and I have to say it happens less often these days which is one reason why I attributed it to axle wrap as well.

Janster - I know what you are refering to when you say the front end goes down and then the back end compensates with a vertical motion. I agree with you, but this is something different. It is a horizontal motion I am experiencing.

I'm not talking about skidding to a stop here. More along the lines of when you are driving down a country road behind someone else at 55 mph. The light ahead of you changes to yellow and you know that you (Car #2) has enough time to make it through, but car #1 decides to stop at the light in front of you, causing you to brake hard. Once I come to a complete stop, give it a 1 second pause and a I experience a horizontal nudge. Almost as if I was getting rear-ended or if I were towing a trailer, the trailer kept coming forward.

    Make sense?

Do you have an Automatic? Search for "lurch".....

There's a distinct lurching feeling that folks get after stopped in the Auto's. I've felt it myself. It's personally happened to me occassionally without the A/C on, nor any blowers or fans running. I watch my scangauge and it's a moment where the idle RPM's jump a bit. I personally consider its the transmission downshifting to 1st ... I've had other automatic vehicles do the same thing.

Doesn't happen all that much to me. It's weird when it happens and you're not ready for it....

Sounds like a combination of axel wrap, and the tranny downshifting into first. The axel wrap is going to feel like someone bumped you from behind. The tranny dropping into first gear feels more like a lurch. :)

Probably the axel wrap and the tranny downshifting into first. Oh well...I can live with it...just wanted to make sure I wasn't hurting anything.

I have the same thing on my 05 DC. The first time it happened, I thought someone bumped me from behind. There wasn't anyone behind me. I wouldn't be too concerned with it. 88,000 miles on my 05, no problems.

Yeah...I bought it from a guy with 25K on it. It was the family's 3rd vehicle.

I have the same problem 05 D-Cab Auto. It feels like getting a bump from the back after stopping for a couple of sec. I think it might be the transmission not settling into 1st gear properly after it down shift from coming to a stop.
When I'm coming to a stop I put the truck into nuetral, I don't notice the bump anymore. I tried this over a dozen times.

The tranny stays in second until you come to a complete stop. Then, after a few secs., it will shift into first. It does this, so if you dont come to a complete stop, it will leave the tranny in second gear for better mpg. :)

Oh ok, so that backs up my tranny theory.

Reviving an ancient thread here, but my '04 just started doing this today. I've had it for a week and a half and never had any issues. I drove it from Flagstaff to Tucson today and it started doing it as soon as I got off the freeway in Tucson. I thought it might be the tranny, but the truck does it even if it's just being pulled along and I give the brakes a little stab.

I'm thinking it's the suspension unloading funky, especially since it's never done it before. It's the exact same thing that mceagle is referring to. I AM worried, though, as it just randomly started doing this. Any thoughts? TIA!

sorry for reviving this but i have the same issue with my 07 trd sport, my truck going in to a hard stop does the harsh bump and kicks the whole body foward after 5 seconds of stoping like as if ive been rear ended, it wont let me press the gas to move foward till the bump occurs. Im also getting codes P0751 and P0756 which are Shift Solenoid "A" Performance and Shift Solenoid "B" Performance, and a code for error of conection for PCM TO ECM or something like that. How did you guys solved it? can a transmission service help my issue? lubricate the drive line? any input is apreciated thanks in advance

that is exactly what those tranny codes are telling you

most likely you have to drop the tranny valve body and replace solenoids.

coming from fast forward to a fast stop, the tranny has to shift you back down into 1st,
and it is slow in doing so maybe because a bad seal or bad solenoid moving like molasses.

you can test this by shifting manually to first and seeing if that gives you immediate forward,
shifting an auto manually in 1st is a mechanical action....coming down from high speed it is
all solenoids and prayers to get it back into 1st.

so, see what it does when you do 1st by hand.

anyhow, your problem is 100% 'tranny needs some new parts'

(or it got water in it and it's about to completely fail)

well i have some sad news i tested this method twice and the truck stalled and died, i drove it in first till i hit about 30 miles per hour then i did a complete stop and the truck died. i also havent checked tranny fluid level on the truck and i have a small leak in the rear seal where the driveshaft and tranny meet. can this be the cause of my issues? think a full trasmission service would help? or should i just look for a donor tacoma and put a used tranny?

2005 taco 4l v6 auto. 85K miles. Bought new and babied. I get the lurch after hard braking. Not that I do that much hard braking but sometimes its unavoidable. It feels like at the last few feet before coming to a complete stop in hard braking mode the truck lurches to a hard stop. Then upon accelerating after the stop, it's like the transmission is in neutral for a few seconds and then kicks in, kind of like popping the clutch if it were a manual. I even chirped the tires one time due to this. People looked and I'm sure wondered what's wrong with that guy? It is really annoying. Make it stop!
