POLL: Are you done with domestic brands or will you give them a second chance?

To expand on this I would love a C10 shortbed 1967-72.

 

Gave up on domestic cars / trucks in 2008.
I grew up with the Blue Oval.
Toyota for me
Sciion for the son
Honda for the wife.

 

I've owned three Mustang GTs (1994, 1995 supercharged and current 2005), a '92 Ranger Sport 4.0 5 speed and a '95 Probe GT. I never had a single problem with any of them, just regular maintenance. I had an '85 Corolla GT-S and blew the motor, then traded it in when the second motor started smoking. My family has had various F-150s, Rangers, Mustangs, Escapes, an Explorer Sport, a Fusion, SVT Focus and also no significant issues. My brother recently had a Sierra Denali and the little things that broke on it drove him nuts, traded it in on a 2015 F-150.

So yes, I'd buy another Ford. I don't think I'd go GM but I did look at the new twins so I could compare them before I ordered my 2016 Tacoma. The twins just don't offer what I want. As soon as my Tacoma is paid off, I'll be updating my '05 Mustang to a '15 or newer Mustang V8.

 

The wife had a 2003 Escape for 6 years and 115k miles, and I had a 2006 E-350 (138k miles) until a month ago. Both were great vehicles, not a lick of trouble with either. So I'd have no qualms about buying a Ford. Chevy and Jeep though, not so much. Had one each of the Astro/Safari twins, and they were crap. Never even drove a Colorado before buying the Taco, because it didn't matter if I liked the truck a little more, I wasn't going to pay that much if I could get a Toyota for the same money.
My earlier experiences with Toyotas ('84 truck, '80 Corolla, '84 Corolla) had all been very good.

 

More than likely will buy another F150, zero issues with any I owned in the past.

Finding out the Tacoma experience is just not for me. Have another year to really decide.

 

there is no such thing as a domestic or foreign anymore.... why in the hell is this even a "poll" Harley has had ABS Japanese parts for um. well when they offered ABS... this crap gets old... most of our cars/ trucks came from or were built or were assembled ...; yada yada.... stupid poll OP, assuming your not really banned.

 

I stopped buying American vehicles in the 1980's when I was working in the automotive repair industry, we were required to perform a total vehicle safety check and almost always had additional sales for repairs from domestic cars, Honda and Subaru came in for oil changes, and that is all they left with. Domestic brands paid my bills for a few years so in a misguided way I'm glad they were junk. Quality has come a long way only because the imports were quality vehicles, if those vehicles weren't allowed to be imported we would still be driving Chevy Citations and Ford Tempos.

 

Many, many Toyota vehicles are manufactured by Americans in the United States. So the real question is.... is my import a domestic vehicle?

Granted half the Tacoma trucks were made in Mexico. But my last car, a Camry, was built in Kentucky. Japanese company that builds in America. Or an American Owned company (GM, Ford) built in Mexico.

 

No. The real question is; what is an "important"?

 

Or perhaps better yet, "What is a Domestic vehicle?" There really isn't one anymore.

 

I had a 2001 Dakota that for the most part was trouble free. Had a weird clunk when shifting at 55mph but it had that from day one and it never got worse. Other than that it was a good truck and I would probably get another if they were still made. Cant seem to get on board with GM. Although Ive never owned one I know plenty of people who have and they all regretted it. Both cars and trucks.

 

In the last few years Ive had 2010 and 2012 Camaros, 2011 Challenger, 2008 and 2015 Mustang, 2011 Wrangler, 2013 Ram 2500 diesel, and a Sonic. (whatever the first year was) Never had a single issue with any of them. Granted I don't keep them that long, but lots of friends/family/coworkers have domestics that are issue free. I think the old biases die hard.

I have a friend that infamously said to me "My parents had a 93 Ford Tempo, American cars are s**t!".
Last year. She said this last yr.
About a month later we took her 03 Element to the dealership cause it left her stranded. I lol'd.

 

Lol My dad still has a ford tempo, he won't get rid of it. This is a guy who has had several American cars but he only rides Japanese motorcycles with the exception of BMW's. When the tempo is out of order he turns to his 1st Gen Accord. But the Tempo seems to be his fav.

 

Not sure if you meant it intentionally or not, but that's an "important" point.
What is important is not where final assembly takes place, but who the designed the vehicle, the assembly process, and the assembly plant. And how QC is handled.
A Toyota plant in the USA and a GM plant in the USA are not the same thing.

 

I wouldn't kick one of these out of my garage.

 

I have two F150 supercrews a 2001 and 2012 not problems with either of them. I have owned several GM vehicles all were POS. I will only buy Ford's or Toyota's from now on.

 

I had a pontiac grand am and a ford focus as my first cars. I didn't have any major problems with either of them (except for somebody totalling the pontiac). I drove the focus from ma to fl and back 3 times. Not one single issue. I also have a respect for the old dodge rams because they remind me of the movie twister. We also had one at my first job. Everybody beat the CRAP out of that truck, and it just wouldn't die. But i am sold on tacomas now and will stick with them.

 

That'll do the job.

 

Let's see I currently drive a Chevy volt, lease is up in febuarary, 2016 Tacoma already ordered.... The Volt is awesome, I love the car, great product just no longer meets my needs.... Looks weird with a compact hatch back loaded with 2x4s at the depot.... I also drive a 2008 Ford e250 van for work. Van is reliable and is a great product as well. I probably would have stayed with Chevy but the Colorado in the LT package was expensive. I ordered a Sr trim Tacoma and to me this was comparable to the LT at a savings of about 4g..... I test drove th f150 loved the truck but it was tight in garage. So long story short I will definitely buy from the big 3 again they make great cars. Reputation can be tough to repair I guess.

 

Why not the R version?...either one is a Beast just curious.
