Doing it this way is one good way of avoiding unnecessary metal to metal contact from the frame to the washer. There's always more than one way to skin a cat right?

Got off my ass and got this done tonight.
OEM bushings were in good shape

But I like the firmness of the new bushings. No test drive yet.

I didn't expect to feel any difference when I went for a drive this morning, but I'm pretty sure the front end was more solid when driving over the many speed bumps in my neighborhood.

I installed the new bushings with small on top.

My truck only has 13K, but these made such a remarkable difference on my last truck I'm going to order a set. Even if the current bushings are still good, these are only $20 and completely change the way the front end feels for the better.

I think some have experienced some banging around with the large washer on the bottom.
If you do, try swapping the washers so the large one is on top.

Hmm I do now have an annoying clanking going on which is either the washer I installed on the bottom or one of my LCA bushings. Gonna investigate this Wednesday

Driving to work this morning has further confirmed that these bushings have firmed-up the front end, and to my surprise it has almost totally eliminated a clunk while driving over bumps and rough road that could felt through my shifter...totally unexpected result. I might put the large bushing on top this weekend to see if that makes any more difference. :)

I don't know what the exact Toyota spec is but I believe it's 35 ft.lbf for the body mounts, maybe same for the radiator.

One way to test to see if your bushings are toast is to simply measure the gap between the bottom of your core support and the top of the frame ( the gap the bushing sits in ) and compare passenger side to drivers side. The three trucks I have installed the full cab kits on all had up to a 1/4" smaller gap on the drivers side which means that bushing is collapsed / crushed on the drivers side significantly worse than the pass side most likely due to the weight of the battery. Since then I look at those bushings on Tacos all the time and notice the exact same thing...drivers side always crushed.

On a side note...I posted this a couple years ago - for everyone that is concerned about hub to fender measurements for leveling out taco lean ask your self...if the drivers side bushing is 1/4" thinner then is your fender sitting lower - yup. So, you're cranking away on your coil over to level your truck when the body is crooked not the chassis. I have seen this with a friend who thought his brand new Pelfry bumper was crooked...nope his drivers side busing was crushed and the body gap variance across the front end to the bumper was very noticeable.

Question - why is everyone using the universal kit ? It is not the same as the Tacoma specific bushing set ?

I did notice that while I had to pry the body up a bit to install the drive side bushing, the passenger side went in with a slight gap. I put the thinner of the two bushings on top.

Of the two kits I'm aware of (because of this thread), the universal one is ~$20 for just the radiator support bushings and the toyota specific one is ~$80 and includes cab mount bushings.

...but the bushings are not the same. Unless they have changed them over the past couple of years The taco specific ones at least in the case of the kits I have done are not the same which is why I think folks are debating which bushing to put on top...use washers or no washers...etc...I mentioned this a few pages back and I'll say it again - do you guys think that those questions and fitment issues should exist if you are using the correct part for the correct vehicle ? The position of the core support should not be a debatable item. A universal body bushing should not be used in a OE application unless they happen to be identical.

Someone with the universal kit with all washers installed post a pic holding a tape measure up in the gap from the core support to the frame and I will do the same so we can confirm if the stack height is the same.
