Do you have to prep the paint/surface before vinyl wrap? Does a properly applied wrap prevent rusting, etc?

I ask because my hood and roof are starting to fade a bit and my hood has a ton of chips in it. Plus I have some rust bubbles forming on the leading edge of the roof where it meets the top of the windshield.

    Clean and alcohol wipe down.

I have a couple areas of peeling clear coat that i'm going to do a light sand, spray some clear to seal it, and they try to buff it to blend it back in just so it looks even.

I'm sure it will help reduce fading since its basically a protective cover over your paint. But for the rust, id say that once it starts forming, you basically just have to get rid if it by sanding to bare metal and repainting

    I has no Tacoma.

Well not until next week anyway:spy:

Has anyone ever driven/camped along the Medano Pass Primitive Road near the Great Sand Dunes? I just heard about it and it seems like it would make for a fun family trip for next summer.

I have spent a ton of time on that road. What would you like to know?

Edit: I live in Alamosa. So I can point you at some other cool places in the area to check out...

Many times for nearly 25 years now. Very mild trail. Only concern are the creek crossings during spring run off. They can get pretty high and flowing pretty quickly.

Basically what I'd like to know is whether a stockish Tacoma can handle this road from end to end and whether I can reasonably expect to get a campsite on the road if I head down there after work on a Friday to camp for the weekend?

    @mountainmonkey

I generally don't tell many people about that road cause they think their Prius is just as capable as a tank. A stock tacoma should be fine to get to the camp sites, as long as you have 4wd and are comfortable in sand.

Here are a few of my tips and advice.

I never air down, they tell you to, I have done it in street tires no problem. Technically you can access the park from the east side over the pass, I would recommend against it. The reason primarily being that they close the road if we have a big water year, so you can be almost all the way to the dunes and come across a metal gate. At that point you have to go all the way around anyways. I am not sure what the deal with camping is, but I believe along the road is first come first serve. There are bear in the area, so be aware. There is a campground, which I have never been in but it is rather large, reservations should be made far in advance.

Few pics of the upper road:

Bugs can be REALLY bad. 2014 there were none, 2015 you could hardly be outside they were so bad.

http://www.nps.gov/grsa/planyourvisit/weather.htm Good place to find weather and river status. I would stay away November-the end of May. Winter is cold. Spring is usually full of dust storms and awful wind, on the dune field it is miserable in the wind.

Western edge of camping 37.802768, -105.497086 If I remember correctly you can only camp in developed sites and no OHVs.

My favorite place to "chill" or take people from out of town is here: 37.771419, -105.507244 I don't really care about TW knowing cause I wouldn't mind running into anyone up there!

If you are in the area I recommend Zapata Falls. pretty cool waterfall down some Precambrian granite. Water can be COLD in july 2 years ago it was 50f. 37.618953, -105.553134 There is a hike up to Zapata lake which is really cool. It is 4 miles each way and steep.

Let me know when you go and I will come by and say hi!

I can add some photos of the road after I find them on my phone. I should make a build/southern colorado adventure thread with all the places I know down here... haha

    It can easily handle it.

Just make sure of the creek crossings. That is all.

Plus if you drive into the park, you'll want the ability to air down and air up because you'll have to drive through sand.

Look man, I don't care so much about bugs and bears and camping spots, but if you could go ahead and give me the next powerball jackpot numbers there might be a little something in it for ya. :D

@steezemcqueen you using Jeff? the OD green is going to look sick on the lobster but you are going to have to come up with a new nickname after the wrap correct?

i was very pleased with the results and we talked about full vehicle wraps while i was at his house
