It doesn't hurt anything except for the waste of the extra money.
Premium burns slower, so it sometimes causes slightly reduced power and mileage if the engine doesn't need the extra octane. I used to work for a dyno company and we did some fuel testing - in the vehicles we tested, they generally made the best power with the lowest octane fuel that was still high enough to prevent pre-ignition or detonation. You generally want faster burning fuel (lower octane) to make sure you are getting complete burn and all of the available energy out of the fuel.

Yeah, Genius. Its real freakin hard to set cruise on flat ground and expect the truck to actually shift. I don't drive 10-15 vehicles a day or anything

This illustrates my truck not shifting into 6th. this is on flat ground. *click for videos*

Start off in S5 and shift to 6, truck doesn't shift.

In drive, truck still in 5th gear.

Got 13.9mpg on that trip. Drove it home 2.5hrs later and 6th gear worked fine and truck got 16.9mpg

Only way I've found to consistently get it back to 6th is turn cruise off and back on. I just drive without cruise since it's not worth the effort.

I put in shell v power in my truck...It might be a placebo affect but the truck seems to like the premium. I average around 20 with modest driving and 18.6 with a lead foot.

I am at 1000 miles, DCSB SR5 4x4 V6 tow package, tonneau cover, everything else stock, and my first two tanks averaged 18.2 mpg and so far this third tank is at 20.1 mpg. I drive a mix of highway and city, depends on the day, and live in ohio so mostly flat with a few hills here and there. Also it's getting cold out, but I have noticed with this third tank almost done my mpg numbers are going up. Best single trip 20 miles 95% highway I had 23 mpg at between 60 and 70 mph (speed limit changes).

Had a Yaris without cruise for 5 years. Only in the ideal conditions do I use cruise.

Was going 75 the other day on a long straight path with cruise on, was getting just over 15 according real time fuel gauge and avg mpg giving right there as well. Rpms where almost 3k. Turned cruise off, maintained speed, rpms dropped and it shifted.

    Weird.

You guys got it. Best is for the best tank. Average is for my current tank. I've been resetting at every fill up.

Made a 300 mile trip yesterday 75% on rural highways but fairly hilly. Average 21.8 mpg for the trip. I used cruise most of the way there and upon arrival my mpg was 19.9. On the way home I drove with my foot and ended up at 21.8. That would put me at 22.75 mpg driving without cruise. I'm good with that.

Someone on another site suggested to tap the gas pedal when it won't shift to 6th when it should under cruise. I was annoyed how it would go up a grade, go to 4th, then never shift to 5th or 6th unless you turned the cruise off. I tried it and it worked the few times I did it. Still experimenting with it; however, better than turning the cruise off, then on again.

My first road trip TRD Sport 4x4 I got 22.5 MPG driving in Iowa through small towns mostly 55 MPH and a couple 65 MPH stretches. I have found the computer to be .5 MPG less than calculating it out manually. So I guess Toyota's number is accurate. Not to the 1000 mile break in point, odometer rolled 500 on the trip. Oh, it's been a week, that's why this thread could not be found.

Drove 110 miles last night home from dealer. 50 miles uphill climb out of desert, 60 miles rolling foothills... 21mph average trip. My wife couldn't hold a constant speed in the car so I drove between 60 and 70mph. I kept slowing down going up hills when following her, which didn't help.

Check out my fuelly numbers in my sig. I now have about 2500 miles on the truck and am averaging 18.1 with my manual transmission and 265/75R16 Duratracs. Worst tank has been 16 best was 19.8. All the highway driving I do is with cruise set at 75 MPH. The 19.8 tank was with a strong tail wind (25-40 mph). I'm happy with 18.1 that seems acceptable for me.

I figure that Toyota advertised the Manual at 17/21/19 My numbers are basically mirroring that (16/20/18) with a 1 mph decrease for larger heavier tires.
