Big 2GR-FKS engine problem

Yes I am a tech. Customer will likely be getting a short block provided the heads are ok. Heads will be stripped down and fully cleaned up and decarboned then reassembled. The main issue is Toyota currently does not have an engine or a gasket set in stock at any of their parts distribution centers in the country, and even told us it will be over a month out...

I contemplated that too. Hard to say. We'd have to reassemble the cylinder head and test it.

That'll be up to toyota to decide what the truck gets, but I'm sure it will at least be a short block based on the cylinder scoring.

 

If I owned the vehicle and it will take a month or more parts, I would request Toyota give me a new truck or a new engine. Assuming the engine could be delivered within a very short timeframe.

 

Where else oil went ?

 

Needs a can of engine restore from bimart....

 

As explained earlier, any parts, including a short block and gasket set, are not in any warehouse in this country and are over 1 month out.

The more important question here is what break-in method was used?

Also, while the engine is out, try to shoehorn a V-8 in there.

modern engines are broken in at the factory and are ready to go before a person takes delivery.

Whatever method was used would be impossible to prove 10,000mi later anyway.

 

I was under the impression that these engines are pretty much robotically manufactured for the most part, no? Robotic cylinder boring as well as piston/ring installation.

 

That maybe true, but I still would take it easy for the first 500-1k miles on any engine.

symptoms for Improper break-in do not show until later in the engine's life. 10k miles is probably the earliest I've seen, but the symptoms can show up after 50k miles as well.

 

if you say so. huge difference between 10k and 50k though.

 

If you're really cautious about it send a sample to blackstone. It's amazing what they can tell you about your engine just by analyzing the oil.

 

Try the 5.7 from the tundra.

 

I don't need to send an oil sample, it all boils down to physics. Every car I've owned has seen past 100k miles some more. I have never had any major issues with them because I nurse the engine early on and gradually drive it harder the closer I get to 1k miles. Someone came up with the idea that its better to drive an engine hard during break in. This technique works for race teams only because they change engines out multiple times during a season.

Good break-in technique and proper maintenance will make any engine last a lifetime. Factory break-in's do not break in the engine, they make sure the engine can turn properly and put out the claimed performance figures.

Yeah and I've had customer cars who had over 300k miles and couldn't even define engine break in.

 

It's a timing chain. Toyota has not used a timing belt on their v6 since 2006 roughly. Ever since they did away with the *MZ-FE designation and switched to the *GR-FE engines, they're all been chain. And aside from the new injection setup, there isn't a lot different from the rest of the GR engines, save for the dual vvti the tacoma never saw before.

I don't think it was coming from the pcv.

 

I doubt the head is screwed by robots, more likely there is still human making final component installation. So all it took is somebody dropping a tool into cylinder or even some piece of metal.

Would not oil get pushed in there during disasembly and when engine was running and pushing oil back into intake. ?
That scratch is pretty big , so unless valve seal has some big scratch as well . I doubt it was valve seal.

 

if they can't get a short block from the pipe line in a timely manner then I'm sure they will pull one or a complete motor from assembly stock. odds of them doing a buy back are rare but might be an option. We had a 16 navigator in that Ford sent out engineers to check out, we were waiting for some lines for something and they weren't even available for sale. Ford pulled them from the production line. Anyway still had problems and they ended up buying it back. Took it apart and found a small crack in the block. Toyota may end up doing something like for customer satisfaction but manufactures usually don't like buying vehicles back. This would only happen because he vehicle is so new. If this happened to someone in a year from now they simply would send a short block, have the dealer swap, test and return to customer
