I was in NC last year during the super moon. The tide came way up and flooded a street near the beach. GF was driving and tried to pass thru. That brand new rental made a sudden thud and stopped at the exact same time. It had lights and electrical but the engine was locked up tight. By the time the flatbed arrived the tide receded back down. I called the rental people and complained the brand new car hit a puddle and just stopped, then demanded a refund. They did and I never heard about it again.

    It would have helped.

A bilge pump would have been useful also.

Screw that. All he needed was a can of flex seal.

Youd be surprised what some redneck engineering could come up with.

A snorkel would have probably saved him if the truck was properly prepped for water crossings beforehand i.e. intakes raised, body plugs in place, electrical connections greased, etc. and if he was able to maintain forward momentum and keep a bow wave. A water bra/water crossing cover is highly reccomended as well. Maintain a speed that will push water out of the way to the sides but not over the hood. Here's an example: http://www.arb.com.au/crossings-covered/
If you lose forward momentum or become stuck it's going to get expensive very quickly. A second vehicle is an extremely good idea and having a tow strap pre-attached and ready to deploy is another good idea.

This incident also exemplifies why you need to walk water crossings before attempting to cross them in the vehicle. A pair of inexpensive waders would have prevented this as well.

    Good article: http://pangaea-expeditions.com/waterproofing-your-vehicle/

Haven't read the rest of the thread yet, but can I just point out how awesome is that when we see a 2nd Gen drown, it's STILL our first reaction to say it's still better than a 3rd Gen. That is all.
