I used to tell people that my truck had a "427" under the hood. That would be 4 cylinders, 2.7 liters. :D

I love my 2.7, but I'll be the first to tell you it isn't for most people. If you are going to get an auto transmission, tow frequently, are looking at it for gas mileage, or are a "spirited" driver get the v6 or you will be disappointed. If you are trying to justify getting the 4 cylinder, don't get it you will be disappointed.

I love mine because it has enough power for my use of the truck, can hold 80 on a grade, and they are the most reliable engine in production in my opinion. They are an option in the all mighty Hilux in other parts of the world. It is also nice because it keeps me out of trouble, I used to be a bit of a speed demon and have a couple nasty tickets that are about to fall off my record, and I would like to keep it clean once they do.

I Have one question for people who off road with their Tacoma (explore remote areas/camping,etc).... is not a 2.7L 5spd Manual 4x4 sufficent in its stock form without significant modifications that add weight? I mean sure it would be nice to have a lift, lockers, bigger tires, etc, but is all that really necessary when 4LO will be sufficent for most trails?

Under most circumstances, yes. 4x4, decent tires and common sense go along way.

Mine's basically an office on wheels, I drive 50k+ miles a year. I have a computer desk bolted to the front inner passenger seat rail. Also has a Lund tri-fold tonno cover to carry catalogs and product samples. Eventually want to get a Leer or ARE camper top with side fold out windows.
I just purchased a 2016 Access Cab SR with the 2.7L four and I absolutely LOVE it. I am a sales rep and drive my own vehicle, we get mileage reimbursement from my company. I had a single cab 2010 F150 XLT short bed with the 4.6L V8. I put 255k on it in 5 years and had no complaints with it at all. It was a tad on the wimpy side when entering a freeway but other than that it was good. Decided to go ahead and replace it as the timing chains were starting to rattle, hydraulic tensioners finally giving up. Had to finally go from 5w20 oil to 10w40 just to keep them quiet.
Now, the Taco, I really am a die hard Toyota fan, I actually sold them from 2001-2004, so I'm thoroughly familiar with them. By nature I'm ultra conservative, otherwise known as cheap. I wanted the least expensive vehicle I could find that would comfortably do the job I needed it to do. There were a bunch of the SR packaged Tacomas on this dealer's lot as well as several other dealers. It had the rear seat deletion which was perfect for me as I need more interior room for "stuff" than for people. I didn't at all mind the 2.7L because it is a proven power plant capable of 300K miles or more. Plus, when operated in the "ECT Power" mode on (light on the gauge) it's extremely peppy. The higher rpms before shifting allows for a "lighter" foot when accelerating plus when passing it downshifts a lot sooner. Believe it or not the gas mileage is better, no doubt from the lighter foot effect.
Ordinarily I would be a little skeptical of any manufactures' new engines until they have been out for a few years but with Toyota's reputation I think the V6 would be a safe bet for someone who wants a V6. I didn't.

Yes. I have taken my 1996 Taco on some tough remote areas in Baja including some roads recommended only for Jeeps or "serious off-roaders". I have a 3" lift, but no locker. It was slow going but it did fine.

I couldn't agree more about the back seat delete. Best option there is on an AC and it makes it cheaper haha. I personally would rather ride in the bed than in the back of an AC. All the seats would have done is take up space.

I had the dealer remove my Munchkin seat headrests before I picked up my truck. The Munchkin seat bottom stays folded up unless I need a shelf to sit something on.

I was going to remove the rear seats until I realized they make a perfect gun rack for my air rifle. With the seats folded up, the barrel goes across the top and part of one seat and part of the stock wedges behind the other. Then I fold the headrests down and put a black dish towel over the scope and it vanishes. So the seats are staying.

Manfrommarrs, you can have cruise control and intermittent wipers with Moe's mods. Truck comes with this. Only thing missing is the switches.

The 4 cyl is fast to me. I don't think I could handle the 6.

New to the site, who or what is "Moe's mods"? Thanks in advance. Really do need both, was surprised it didn't have either.

I traded my '11 2.7 tsp. AC (4x4), on a '14 DCLB TRD Sport, and miss my old truck every day. I never floored my 4cyl, and never floor my V6. I have had to pay at the pump, however, to the tune of 3mpg. I find it a high price to pay for something I don't use.

I would go with a 4 banger again...
