I noticed my manual transmission feels different than any other manual I've driven in the past. It's almost like I can feel everything through the shift knob if that makes sense? It sort of feels like there is no fluid in the transmission but it still shifts smooth. Is that normal for these Tacomas?

Feel what? Vibration? Grinding? Clicking or clunking? Is it only during shifts or while in gear? Does it change when you are sitting still and idling?

I have more questions then answers.

H can feel quite a bit through the shifter in my second gen. I wouldn't worry about it.

I guess its more like clunking. No vibration or grinding. And I only feel it when I shift into a gear-all gears. It feels the same if I'm idling or going 60mph. It's probably just gonna take some getting use to. I think this is the only 4x4 manual transmission I've ever driven. All others have been 2 wheel drive.

I've owned a few cars that had more of a 'positive' engagement feel during shifts. Almost like you could feel the teeth of the gears being forced to sync. Heavier gear oil makes it more noticeable. A heavy shift knob does help with that.

It took mine nearly 20,000 miles to "break in." If you've only driven front wheel drive cars, this is a different animal. The shifter is more solidly coupled to the transmission. Ever notice the shifter bobbing left and right? That's because the engine and transmission move taking the shifter along with them. You'll feel a lot more in the shifter than a front wheel drive car where the shifter is mounted to the car's frame and likely uses cables to operate the transmission.

And yeah, it drives like a truck. A previous poster suggested a heavier shifter knob. That works. I shuddered at the $40 cost of a TRD shift knob, but it was well spent. The added mass makes a major difference.

What krogen says. For rwd cars you get the direct shift feel rather than you shifter pulling cables on a fwd because of how it is mounted.

    Enjoy :)

I was a little worried myself because as wel as I tried to press the clutch, shifting inti gear kinda felt like a popping a joint into a socket, you can feel a lot more than I was used to. But apparently it's normal...as is the engine ticking. Just have to get used to it.
