Transmission Guru's, I need help fast

I accidently drained the transmission fluid(yes, I'm a dumbass). Anyway I have limited computer access. Toyota is telling me I need a scan gauge to monitor trans temps. The guy here at the Air Force hobby shop says we can just fill it. It's in 08 Tacoma Auto trans 4x4.
I fill at the "check" bolt correct?
Please call me with any help or advice when filling the tranny back up.

yes,fill to top of fill hole,then start engine and fill till fluid just starts to run out

 

Where is the fill hole? I removed the "check" bolt on the bottom of the pan. I pump fluid in, But it comes right back out when I remove the fill hose.

 

the drain bolt is in the pan,the fill /check hole is on the passenger side above the pan.

Hmmm this seems easier than I thought. So jumping a couple of pins on the OBDII port is not necessary? And can someone elaborate 3a?

 

If he just drained it into an emtpy clean pan, he knows how much to add back. If you don't know how much to add, you have to jumper wires and go througha sequence with the shifter to put it in temp check mode. Sucks is the exhaust is hot and when I did it I burnt myself several times. (I added a aftermarket temp gauge and had a small leak, didn't know how much I had lost) You don't need a special tool, just some wire to jumper some pins.

MAKE SURE YOU ONLY USE THE WS Toyota Fluid!

 

Read (print) this, shows you the pins to jumper and the shift sequence to put it in the right mode, you have a limited amount of time before the tranny gets to hot, and remember not to do it in a closed garage or have a way to vent the exhaust.


Go slow, do it right, USE ONLY THE ATF WS FLUID!!!! Its a tranny, a tow to the dealer, and a few hundred dollars is cheaper than a new one. But it can be done.

 

UPDATE:

-I added the fluid until it leaked out of the check tube per instructions above. Tightened everything and test drove. Truck would not always downshift during slowing and would slip once stopped.

-Called toyota and they said it takes 3.2 QTS. Now the instructions above say 1.3qts. Anyway the resident mechanic said, "add another qt and try again". So I did. Trans was still slipping

- Added another quart, which equals just about 3.2 like toyota told me. Test drove it and feels fine. Does seem a little different, but maybe because I'm looking for shift points and stuff like that.

I still might take it to toyota next week so that the correct fluid w/ the right temps gets done properly.

 

My interpretation of 3a is to add about 4qts of trans fluid. The pan holds 1.3qts and the entire trans holds 5.3qts. So when the pan is full and overflowing thats 1.3qts. in the trans then you fill it with 4qts to bring it up to 5.3qts. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

 

So I've been doing some research. I guess I need to have the truck running open the check tube and fill up the transmission until it starts to leak out of the check tube.?????

Or should I just take it to toyota, which is gonna cost $250-$290??

 

I thought you are supposed to add the 1.3 after pan is full.

 

I have performed the drain / fill on my AT twice now. Both times the AT took APPROXIMATELY 2.9 liters to refill to the correct level.

Why not jump the connectors and enter the test mode? You have already refilled and opened the overflow plug - which is by far the hardest part. Most people WAY overestimate the difficulty of this procedure and perform the task improperly by either not accounting for fluid temperature, or using an IR thermometer and reading the temp of the ATF pan rather than the ATF itself. It takes time for the heat of the ATF to transfer itself to the ATF pan, therefore by the time the pan gets up to temperature the ATF temperature has likely surpassed the appropriate range. And why wait under the truck with a thermometer for 10-15 minutes when you could be sitting in your seat listening to music? When performed from a cold state my fluid took 14 minutes to reach the appropriate temperature. Is spending 14 minutes underneath the truck really easier than jumping two connectors and moving your shift lever 6-8 times?

TO ENTER TEST MODE:

1.) With the truck in "P" and still idling, I jump the #4 and #13 pins on the OBD connector. Several of the dash warning lights will begin to flash (normal).

2.) Then shifting from "P" to "N" (pausing briefly in "N" and your foot on the brake), begin a series of "N" to "D" to "N" cycles with the shifter. After about 6-8 shifts the red "AT TEMP" light will illuminate for 2 seconds (important to note).

3.) Place the AT back into "P" ("AT TEMP" light will illuminate again for 2 seconds) and let the truck idle to warm the fluid. It is important to note that the "AT TEMP" light illuminates briefly verifying that the truck entered "Temp Check Mode". Without this verification, you may wait all day for a light to illuminate without the truck actually being in mode.

4.) When the "AT TEMP" light STEADILY illuminates the fluid is at the correct temperature for verification. If the "AT TEMP" should begin to blink, the fluid has surpassed the correct temperature and must be cooled. It takes a very long time for the fluid to cool - much longer than expected (dependent on ambient air temp).

5.) Leave the truck idling and open the overflow plug. When the fluid flow slows to a trickle, replace plug and tighten. It is important to note that the truck MUST REMAIN IDLING during the overflow plug removal/drain to achieve proper level. And YES, it does matter.

I still can't believe I did this. The whole point was to do it myself and save money. Needless the say I spent a whole lot more. I forgot to mention that I added 5.5 qts to the motor that was not drained. FML.

 

And to those wondering, that chart is obviously wrong (as was the one Toyota published in the owners manual of the 1st gen Tacomas).

I seriously doubt it. In the near future when you get a few spare minutes grab a piece of wire and practice entering the TEMP CHECK MODE as per my instructions. When you become comfortable with it, once again drain your fluid and refill properly. If nothing else, you'll gain some confidence knowing your AT was serviced correctly and learn something new about your truck.

I see I am going to have to take a few pictures this weekend and maybe a small video on how to get the truck in temp check mode. It is so amazingly simple it is really laughable once you try it.

Well I put in 3 qts. So next week I will do your jumper instructions, get it up to temp, and open up the overflow plug and go from there(add or let trickle out, depending).
