SO interestingly, I was at the dealer today just looking at the new tacoma again to see if they have a manual in yet for me to test drive got to talking with a sales rep and a manager. Told them about how many are disappointed with the new auto trans etc

Anyways they said everyone should file a complaint etc or just a review to toyota about it.
It is an electronically controlled transmission. They suggested that if they get enough complaints that Toyota may recall the new trucks to do a new coding change on the transmission. Its an electronically controlled transmission, so at the end of the day it could be coded out so that it doesn't change gears as much.

SOOO everyone should be filing a complaint. I know here in canada many are calling complaining how we didn't get the double cab OR. Basically the dealer has said that if enough people complain they will have to fix it.

I am sure toyota has to be aware of this problem already. If you look at any reviews of the truck they all mention how the transmission is constantly shifting.

Wishful thinking. The engine/transmission system does what it does to meet the U.S. CAFE requirement.

Same here. I happen to like it. If you want peppy, ECT is more than enough. I like my mileage and have yet to have it not go faster when I push on the pedal.

I got a reply back from them, completely oblivious to it. Toyota is under the impression that everyone loves it LOL

Who doesn't love it... great mileage.. low RPM's = long engine life.... What's to not like.... So it changes gears... That's what an automatic tranny is supposed to do... I love this tranny.... I wouldn't change a thing about it... (It does seem a little too advanced for some though!!)...

Any possibility of an aftermarket solution to adjust shift points?

It shouldn't lug the motor. It does do this at low speeds to the point the powertrain in my truck goes "uh-uh-uh" once it shifts into what I believe is 4th or 5th at very light throttle. The shift points need a little work at the minimum. I've never had one vehicle that shifts and causes the engine to lug like this one does. Mileage or not, that isn't right.

My concern may be old school but I do not want it to constantly/excessively downshift out of 5 and 6. I have to believe that will cause premature wear as in the past with others trans designs. I shift over to 4 as a rule and bump it up only when needed.

Do people not like the manual transmission or do people not know how to drive them? Seems like it may be the better choice for people complaining about shift points and gear hunting.

Toyota's not supplying long beds with the manual, at least here in the states. Pretty sure they are up north though, right?

as much of a fan of manuals as I am, I do not like the long throws of trucks.
even though the tacoma doesn't have that long of throws, still way to long for me from what I am used to.

And in traffic which living in the city is a very daily thing, not the greatest to drive a manual. Otherwise I love to have them.

Stop and go during rush hour can be brutal with a stick. I had two 4Runners with manual in the mid 90's while I lived in the San Diego area. Those were my last manuals.
