Take the metal internal key out of the FOB. Put FOB in truck. Close doors and lock driver side door with metal key (same metal key that is located inside the FOB. This will lock all doors with the FOB inside the truck.

Exactly the procedure to put it to sleep. Red LED will flash 4 times on the fob. I do this for the Key to my wife's Rav to save the battery on the fob I carry in my Tacoma.

Holey Banana Chocolate flapjacks Batman ... I got dizzy reading that! Is this actually true? ... argh ... I was going to go outside, and try it, but I am worried it might actually work and I will have disabled my Taco ... then I would have to do all these instructions again plus light scented candles while clicking my shoes together 3 times ... and I will be darned if I am going to go to Kansas to get my Taco

    :annoyed:

    Thanks guys!
I think I will stick with the lock box idea and try to find one big enough for the fob. The sequence that puts the fob to sleep seems like I would have to find the coefficient of pi. Which is far beyond my mathematical limits.

Am I missing something? Have u tried it?

    Edit
    What I posted previously.
I'm beginning to seriously question if this thread is serious? Also what's on second, I don't know is on third.

I had the smart key system on my old hybrid camry. There should be a physical key inside the fob that you can use to unlock the door. And the fob will work even if the battery is dead - in the camry I had to hold the fob up to the button for a few seconds and the car would let me start it, even with a dead fob (only happened to be once). I'm sure the newer systems work the same way (my car was an 07 model).

Can confirm. I surf 4 days a week. My buddy has a Prius and it works the same.

Remove the key from the fob, lock the fob in the truck. Can only unlock the truck with the key manually. Key is 100% waterproof.

Do not use any key locker. Here in Hawaii a lot of people put their keys in there when they surf, criminals watch for it and cuts the lock box off and breaks it open. They then come back and steel the car. I do a lot of fishing where I got to wade in the water. The only thing I can do is to use a watertight Pelican case and put my phone and keys in there. For surfers, I know they make small waterproof hard cases where just the fob would fit. Maybe they can attach it to their leash.

Here is a simpler solution that won't cost you anything:
(unless someone breaks into your truck and steals it)

    1. Park the truck and leave the windows open about an inch. (Hope it doesn't rain)
    2. Lock the doors.
    3. Throw the fob back inside through the small opening in the window.
    4. Hope nobody figures out that all they have to do to steal your truck is get into it somehow and push the start button.

    Are floor mats a mod?

If it's anything like my ex Prius, if the fob is within about 10' of the truck, it will unlock it.

Yeah Sbpark, be warned... In Hawaii a lot of cars were stolen this year using these lock boxes. Chronics just cut them off with a lock cutter, take the box to a remote place to crack it open. It take just minutes.

Many friends used a lock box when i lived in SoCal and never had a problem. And as far as being warned, I don't use one regardless. Like I mentioned, I stow my FOB in the bed (i have the factory tonneau). Then I take the trunk key in the water with me. Super simple solution. Guys are making this way too complicated.

What is a trunk key? Mine only came with keys that have the unlock/lock buttons.

Here is a steel locking replacement door for the bed storage compartment. Looks pretty sturdy with reinforced frame. Would need to verify that it is far enough from the sensor to prevent opening the door etc.

I'm looking for one of these for my 2nd Gen.
I get $50 for a set but like $50-60 each. YIKES! I just spent $80 to put a locking tailgate handle on. It's better than getting your stuff stolen but does anyone know of a cheaper option?
