idk how many miles you all have on you alls 3rd gen but im at 5200 miles. At the beginning i was also bothered by the shifting(this is my first toyota btw) i didnt mentioned anything...but after the "break in" my taco shifts a lot smoother. Maybe its just the breaking in process of the engine...if u all havent reached 1-3k in your truck give it some time you should feel a difference....i drive an auto SR DCSB

From what I've read... the tranny has to "learn" how you drive.... not sure how long that takes........... Then it tries to fit your personal style...

    Cheers.

    exactly.

my drive to work is 30-40 min. same drive home is 1 hour 15min to 1 hour 30min. because of all the traffic.
average speed into work 120km whole way on the highway. on the way home I am lucky to get over 60km. its pretty much just stop and go stop and go for a good 45min of the drive. which is on the highway the other 45 min is streets from the jobsite to the highway or highway to house.

I've driven standard cars in this traffic no thanks. Toronto has the worse traffic in Canada. Probably one of the worse in North America. Mostly because our public transit system is terrible so everyone drives.

Manual really is not an option.

Blah blah blah. People who love manuals don't complain about the traffic crap, You just deal with it. There's a lot of pros and cons to a manual, and the pros out-weight an auto for pure driving pleasure of a clutch... Also the throws aren't bad. I have driven tons of cars with short throws and the Tacoma is fine. Get over it, it's a truck with torque. I'm sick of the city slicker complainer and laziness of manual haters. Manuals will always be more fun to drive, simply put. It's the simplicity of the transmission that I like, and I can tell it to do what I want when I want. #ManualTransmissionsFTW

I'd much rather have a manual, traffic or not. Couldn't find a MT truck though. Two of my 1st Gen Tacos were V6 / 5-Speed trucks and I loved them.

I agree. Traffic is not terrible where I live and my work schedule avoids rush hour most days, but I don't mind driving in stop and go traffic when I have to. It just requires more focus on what I'm doing.....driving.

Honestly, I would have waited to find one on Cars.com or ordered one. I agree with you though. I test drove the auto, just to say I did....no matter how they've revised it, it still doesn't compare nor will it ever to a manual. Brake and Gas...a monkey could probably drive one if you trained it.

May your clutch go out on you while you're joyously stuck in stop and go traffic on Friday afternoon at 5:30 pm driving northbound through Rancho Bernardo on the 15 in the #3 lane!

Haha, that would suck. I know how bad it gets in there. I avoid it like the plauge. You "should" know though if your clutch is on its last leg, and needs to be replaced, no surprise. There are mechanical errors that do take place in all man-made machinery, but I'd have to say a manual transmission is very reliable. Hence less moving parts involved in making it function. Battery dies? Bump start it....Parking break doesn't function? Throw it in gear....Can't get your automatic tranny out of "Park"? Manual, just push in clutch, throw it in a gear or neutral....Throw out bearing or clutch linkage bad?Float gears/Rev match....

    Right on!
Come on people it's not that hard. I only have a 10 mile commute when I'm in the office but it can often take 30 to 40 minutes to get home at the end of the day. It's 2nd nature just to go between 1st 2nd and neutral without even thinking about it when in traffic. Hell, whenever I'm in one of the company trucks, I'm constantly reaching for the stick that's not there :).

The real benifit is when off road. Put it in 1st and 4Low when going down a steep trail...no brakes needed, try that in an auto on a slippery slope and the tranny will likely go into 2nd and you risk slip sliding away when you tap the brakes. Who needs crawl control when YOU can be in control, not the "smart chip" in the computer?

And I did not need a clutch until well past 150,000 in my '96.
