My 2003 tacoma 3.4 4x4s air bag light is staying on. I left the battery disconnected for a night and it stil l stays on. I than checked the air bag connections and they all seems to be plugged in. I than did the paper clip "code read" by jumping the 2 connection on the obd2 plug. The abs and cruise light flashed but the airbag light remained on and did not give me a code. Any ideas?

Either your spiral cable or airbag control module under the ash tray. I had to pay 100 dollars for Toyota to tell me by computer. Mine was the module.

x2, need a decent scanner to look up airbag codes.......or take it to Toyota and have them scan it as mentioned above.

A used Snapon MT2500 is probably the cheapest option for a full feature scanner. I paid $500 for mine, but in included all the modules for Toyota, Nissan, Honda, BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Jeep/Dodge, and GM, along with all the matching OBD1 connectors and accessories. Its the best investment ive made. You can probably get a less complete kit with just the OBD2 cable and Asian module for under $200.

You would be much better paying $200 for a tool you can use forever than $100 for a stealership to use theirs once.

    Probably a bad clockspring.

Here are my air bag codes
Cruise and horn work so it makes me wonder if it's not clock spring.

I have inspected the connectors in steering wheel and all the air bag connections. No issues. Will let sit and plug battery back in

You should determine what is causing the code before going to buy parts.

I have pulled codes leading to clock spring. Inspected plugs . What else can I do besides a voltage test.

It reading both short and open. On second thought it could be an internal failure of the part. Id see if theres a procedure for this in the FSM. Seeing as its only $18 for the part, its not bad for a repair. It would be over $400 if the dealer did it. Its just not a common failure.

Did they keep coming back after being cleared?

Couldn't clear it because it's a hard code or what ever. I removed battery for half hour. Came on

What app is that. You need to get one that has full two way communication. Anything you download isnt going to have that capability. Even if you replace the part, the codes will still be there.

So prolly not the case because this is super weird, but....i had a nagging airbag light staying on a couple years ago, couldnt figure it out for the life of me even had a couple different peeps look at it, everyone was stumped!! Now i cant remember which one it was plugged into, either the cig lighter or one of the two accessory plugs, but i shit you not i unplugged my cell phone charger from one of those and boom light out!!

Wow i just was trying to figure this out a few days ago. It happens when i had my charger plugged into the cigarette lighter with my battery pack or phone hooked up. Its basically trickle charging back into the car when you turn it off. Why this causes the airbag light to come on, is kinda weird. If you look at both the wiring diagrams for the cig lighter and the airbag warning light/airbag module, they both share a power source from the 15A Cig fuse. This fuse though is usually switched off from the power outlet relay. So they are connected.

Wow, im glad to hear my truck isnt haunted, ha! It really is strange. Straight drove me nuts for a good long while and what really drove me nuts is it would go on and off. I was always relieved when it would go out thinking it was gone but then bam, the fucker would be back. But it was just me plugging or unplugging the damn charger in or out, lol! Then one day i happened to be watching the light as i unplugged the charger and was dumbfounded as i watched the light go out then back on as i plugged it back in. I couldnt remember which plug it was that did it, but it was only just the one plug that caused it. But after you said it was your cig and not the accessory it made me remember it was my cig lighter aswell that caused it. The light would even be on with the vehicle off too if i remember right, just like yours!..really weird!

I expect there is a diode somewhere in the mix to keep the light from coming on with the key on current flowing as it usually does to power the airbag module. With key off, the current would flow back, into the airbag module, triggering the warning light. Basically the power source of your cell phone plugged in was simulating a short to B+.

Weird they would have the cigarette lighter fuse as a power source for this. But whatever, if it works, it works.

I have a 98 tacoma extended cab and was wondering if I could do this without any issues... If both the modules are the same could I swap them and see if the light disappears and than I will know that I need to replace one. Or is that risky or are they vin locked

They are probably serialized with the VIN, but its not going to affect anything.

Youre over thinking this. Try posting in your regional forum to find someone with a good scanner with full duplex communication to clear the SRS codes. Your app and $20 OBD adapter isnt going to cut it. Some higher end Autels or Innovas, any Snapon scanner, any Autologic. Im not sure what system the Toyota dealers use currently, it used to be a handheld device by Mastertech. If you have an OBD to USB or serial cable, you may be able to download the emulation program the dealer uses.
