Should I trade??

I have had my 09 Tacoma 4X4 for a little over a year and have just over 10k on the clock. When I purchased it I originally wanted a new FJ however could not find a manual version and also was worried Toyota was going to dis-continue the model.

Today I saw a few 2010 FJs at a local dealership and they have a Sandstorm 6 speed. It claims to have an improved motor (260hp) and the damn thing just looks really nice to me. I actually stopped in and have an appt. tomorrow to drive it and consider a trade. Now that it seems they have not been dis-continued and are even more improved I am really thinking hard of trading my beloved 2nd gen.

I have a very nice 99 model Tacoma 4x4 that just sits in my garage anyway. I figure I could use that when I need an actual truck and keep the new FJ for daily driving. I am really thinking hard of trading however I also very much like my new Tacoma. I believe the trade value may not be worth it as it is so new so if the numbers do not look good I will not jump into a bad deal.

The sales guy told me a used-new one like mine with low miles would sale easy and they could make it worth my wild to trade....yeah they all say that crap however I will let him try to win me over.

So if it were you in this situation would you trade or should I stay put? I really hate kicking myself every time I see a slick FJ drive past wishing I would have waited for a manual to hit my area dealer.

 

I say go for it! Fj's are sick. I personally wouldnt trade my Taco for a Ferrari for free, but then again, im obsessed!

 

Hopefuly they won't rape you on the trade in. I'd get a value put on the vehicle just to see. If you think it's fair, go for it. Get want you want, only have one life to live.

I was going to trade my 99 f150 in for a downpayment and they said it wasn't even worth 2k. I put it up on a classified site and sold it the next day for 5k. Just be careful man

 

Since you have a spare 99 (nice to have btw ) , would you consider selling yours outright?
Its win win for you then and dealer doesn't make all that $$.
Post here and CL to see the interest, the FJs will always be on their lot.
If its too much of pain, then trade it in. You might as well drive what you want for this kind of $$.

 

Check your sate sales tax laws first. In Illinois, you pay sales tax on the price difference between your trade and what you're buying. If you sell your trade to a private party, you lose that benefit. On a new vehicle and with up to 10% sales tax, that can add up to thousands of dollars.

 

Good Point to check your states law.
In Vermont, you get a tax credit up to 90 days prior or after a sale on all registered vehicles. You must be the registered owner on both. You fill out a form online and they cut you a check.

 

Where the rubber meets the road is when you hear what this "worth your while" dollar amount is! I would sell the hell out of the 1st gen. and put that $$$ down on a used FJ. Depending on whether or not the 1st gen is paid off, and how much you put down on your second gen., along with what your payments are on the 2nd gen- it may be more possible than you think!

 

You only live once man. If you can afford it then i say get what you really wanted.

Like you said, you already have a Tacoma (any generation of this truck is beautiful).

Sounds to me youve already sold yourself on this, if you can do it i would do it. Trust me, ive been wanting a Tacoma my whole life and would be kicking myself if i purchased the Camaro or Challenger.

 

It all depends on what you want. But to pay your monthly bill and not be happy is no bueno in my opinion. I was looking at FJ's too, and theyre awesome vehicles, specially with the improved engine and all. If you can get a decent deal, I say go for it.

 

Well much to my suprise the dealer made a mistake as the sandstorm on their lot is not a 6 speed after all. When I arrived they tried their best to get me to drive it anyway however the auto is a deal breaker for me.

I had the dealer try to locate one and again I was suprised to not find a manual 2010 anywhere in the southeast area. The sales guy went on and on about their Toyotathon sales event claiming he could deeply discount the 2010 automatic. I walked away from the lot however he did say he would call me when a manual was available....he also said they did not have any manual versions ordered.

What the hell... is a manual transmission really that rare in the FJ? I really wish I would have known it was an auto before I blew a Saturday on the lot with no results. When I originally called and asked about it the salesman told me it was a manual and I believe he really thought it was. What made me angry was when I arrived and said I must simply have a manual he tried to sale me the auto anyway.

Looks like I will be waiting for a while or either driving out of state to find one. While I really would like to have one I do not wish to go to all the trouble of working a deal out of state and especially if I have not even driven one before I decide to buy. I can not even find a manual 2009 locally to simply test drive much less a 2010 model.

If thats what you really want go for it...i was waiting for a long time when i found the tacoma i wanted and i could not think about anything else until i bought it...So GOOO for it

 

It's not that odd that they can't find a manual, to me at least. I went to four different dealerships looking for an access cab, 6speed 4x4 in sport. EVERY dealership I went to was pushing automatic's down my throat (because it takes no effort on the sales guy's part to sell a truck on the lot, as opposed to finding one close and making a deal). I left my number with them, and 2 months later I got a call about a used (6k miles) 4x4 AC sport in 6speed that had just come in. Walked in, got a deal and bought it that day. Keep hunting, and don't settle on such a large purchase that you'll expect to have for a number of years.
