Why not get a Jeep?

From a guy that drives a 2wd.....

 

I've considered a new Jeep over the past year. I don't need a box nor do I tow. Arguments that don't add up to me:
"Hard on fuel" - I think they're very similar mpg wise
"Rattles" - For the $ I have into my Taco I wouldn't expect to have the rattles I have. Passenger seat, windows, headrest...all rattle.
"Rough ride" - I have Toytec adjustable coilovers. When adjusted to anything over 2" I think they ride like crap. Ride opinions vary.

I had a 94 Stock YJ (upgraded tires). There's no way my current Taco would follow where I went with that thing.
I wanted to test ride a sport model in October. Low and behold none left in Canada. I ended up trying the Rubicon. To me it was no rougher than my Taco. We'll see what the future holds.

Lol, i just posted my taco vs jeep experience a couple posts before i shared my vote with this thread. If my jeep is in fact a prius id better get it checked cause its using a lot of gas!!

To be fair, I have a 2007 DCSB OR V6 and a 2001 TJ sport I6. The truck rides better and is safer. I need it for towing. The jeep is just fun and I can abuse the Shit out of it and not care. I need it for an excuse to spend hours in the garage tinkering and drinking beer. So honestly OP I think you need both to be responsible. I also have an LR4 but I guess we shouldn't start comparing luxury to economy... Haha

Where I come from, 'go fuck yourself' is a term of endearment, so I'll take that, good sir!

X2 on grabbing an older Jeep. That's going to be my course of action. However, looking to start cheap - $5k or under to get started, so I may be looking at an early to mid-90s YJ. If I can find a mid to high-mileage TJ for that price, then I may jump on it.

I originally planned on buying a JK before my taco, but ended up driving a tacoma first since I was coming from a 4runner. Overall I made the choice because I wanted more options, and the bed solved that problem. Now coming up on two years of ownership I know I've made the right choice and probably wouldn't be happy in a JK due to the lack of space

Nice! I think that's what I'm going to end up going with, BUT I'll probably go with a CJ / YJ. I'd love a TJ, but I think something older will let me fix more things and have it be a hobby that keeps me busy!

 

There we go, I knew I had a Better pic in here somewhere, I went with a Tj because of the suspension set up, I didn't feel like dealing with leaf springs in the front, however if you get a Tj it will still be one nice long project

 

Definitely lean towards a higher mileage TJ. The newer models (2001+ IIRC) have coils on the plugs vs. distributors. And the pre~'92 YJ's still had carbs. Plus the TJ's have coil springs on all four corners which makes it easier to lift and tune height/firmness to your liking. Yeah a YJ can use cheap shackles, additional leafs and stuff but that's not reason enough to justify one. A good YJ lift would involve a SOA conversion or even a full coil conversion. I've owned both YJ and TJ and I'll "never" revert back to the former...

Be aware of the axles when shopping for wranglers. At a minimum you want a Dana 30 up front and Dana 44 in the rear. The rubi's come with Dana 44 Front/Rear and a higher numerical ratio in the t-case. 3.73 or higher ring and pinions and never look back!

Agreed - beautiful vehicles. I'll likely start looking around after the holidays, but will take my time finding 'the one' haha.

Wouldn't mind a TJ, but I would like one that has a few issues, and one that may or may not need a drop-in 4.7L stroker from Titan Engines in the next few years. Now that'd be a fun project!

 

I had a 10-12K budget for my current used truck, and in that range, most of the JKU's were high mileage rattle traps and needed lots of work. I ended up with a 2nd gen Xterra in great condition that is more reliable than a Jeep. I will give credit to Jeeps in the resale value department though- they are up there with Tacomas, probably because of some sort of secret collusion among Jeep owners.

 

I chose option #3.
I own a Heep.
I use it to pull my dock out of the water and plow my driveway.
I don't ever even start it for other purposes.
Only need it because the "family car" (Subie) is unsuitable for plowing snow or pulling the dock out.
Only bought it because it was Cheep.
Rats live in the air blower. It smells like rat poop.

Heeps suck.
Did I mention that I hate it?
