I think my TJ gets 14-16 with 31" BFG AT, when it had the 30" good years on it, I got 19-21

Leaf sprung suspenion front and rear, open diffs... it was great for a ranch truck but more than that it would need some lockers, better suspension etc to go where i can go in the taco.

Like I said, I still think you need both. A beater jeep would serve you well.

My TJ has 33's and I haven't re-geared it. MPGs are terrible. Once I get both axles re-geared, I suspect it'll get a little better.

Good Lord! Can you give us a little back story on that? Like, "Well, I rigged the wiring harness to suit the 33 Billion Lumen LED light bar and ...."

Agreed. I have both and think my off-road problems are none.

I had an 07 TRD and loves it. Wish I never sold it. It was more comfortable of an off-roader than the jeep, made less noise. But I shied away from some stuff that the wranglers were doing.

My YJ on 33's with 4:88's got any where from 14-20 depending on how fast I was going, around town and on the easy highways 55/60 MPH I could avg 19, but, on the interstate at 70+MPH 14 lol

To be fair, I have praised the wranglers in my posts but I recently had a chance to sell my 07 dc with 133k for $18,000 and backed out. When it comes down to it, living without a truck after you have one is hard!

Very true! I definitely use that bed a lot. I toyed with the idea of a small trailer, but that would be annoying to have to hook up every time I wanted to throw something out back.

That's what's going to happen, but this thread is still fun to get everyone's opinion.

If you buy a "crappy old Jeep", you will end up pouring a ton of money into it anyway. I have owned three CJ's throughout the years, and they were all reliability nightmares. No one ever said "I bought a Jeep for their time-tested reliability".

Lol that acronym sucks. It sneak a word in with a 'n. That's cheating.

I agree with you that their reliability isn't stellar. At this point, my 'crappy old Jeep' is going to be for a hobby to work on, so a few problems would actually be welcome! I have had a few Jeeps in the past, and enjoy working on them b/c they're so simple.

JunkEach'nEveryPiece is an old, old acronym... I am pretty sure the expression was coined about 3 minutes after the first CJ came of the assembly line. HA.

I don't think Jeep has ever offered a "good" engine option in the 70, or so, years they have been in production. Remember the Dauntless 225 or the Iron Duke? I am sure everyone wants to forget those... they sucked!

Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of good looking and very capable Jeeps out there. Jeeps are fun when you are young because young people typically don't mind tinkering, but I would much rather have an old 4 runner or Landcruiser.

No reason not to own both. Jeeps pretty much stink as daily drivers. 2nd gen Tacos pretty much stink at offroading unless its just rough roads and higher speed desert stuff where the IFS is actually useful. So Taco for DD, hunting, fishing, camping, skiing, light offroading, etc. Solid axle Jeep for real offroading.

The AMC 4.0 is highly regarded. I'd call it better than "good."
