Spend a little more, and get one that'll hold up. Get something like a Sea-to-Summit for a very good basic cover. If you want something a little better you can get a ZPacks cubenfiber cover for about $40.

You send in picture ID and a pay stub. They give you a one time coupon code. You load up your cart and pay. You can't hit the back button or nothing. Make sure you have everything you want. No going back.

Another good stove is the Soto Windmaster. Comes in at a little under 3oz, and does a pretty good job at blocking the wind.

The only issue with those is stability of the whole thing with your heavy water pot or mug at the top. Just be careful using it.

I used to cook/hear water with one of those micro burners. Their compact size is great. I found that I like using my Jetboil more these days though

Just a bunch of old crap
So I've been playing around with the smaller model Toaks woodburning gasifier stove. It's a great little wood burner that's fantastic for bug-out kits and fuel-less camping. It's a 3 piece kit that nests together, but I wasn't happy with how tall the pot rest section sat, so I did a little modification.

My removing the pot rest 3rd section, and adding an Evernew alcohol stove cross stand, I lowered the pot closer to the woodburning chamber of the Toaks stove and get a much better burn time. Just a tiny bit of trimming and filing to the cross stand made it fit perfectly onto the bottom 2 sections of the Toaks stove so it still creates an elevated stand, but now doesn't really require a windbreak to stay efficient. The cross stand still fits the alcohol stove, too, so I can bring that along.

I boilded a full 32oz of cold water outside at 48 degrees at 1600' elevation in 7 minutes and 23 seconds (rolling boil) on just one handful of wood chips (no need to add more wood) and still had 4 extra minutes of simmer heat with the coals in the stove.

I'm using the titanium BOT by Vargo, and I now have a huge multi-fuel kit ready to go. Everything here is nested inside, except for the fuel canister and extra titanium bowl. The BOT nests in the bowl, and the canister sits on top of the BOT in a molle water bottle holder with front pouch (where I keep a scotch-brite pad and soap). Now I have a titanium gas stove (in green bag), alcohol stove, and woodburning capability.

Have you looked into a Vargo stove? It's an alcohol stove, but very small. We saw some people using them on the trail, but really don't like that you can't control the flame.

I don't think we'll take that plunge. Nothing beats our old MSR Pocketrocket, and our Soto Windmaster.

I have the Evernew alcohol stove already in this kit, and I love it. It's tiny, and it's titanium so it's very light.

Yes thanks for the advice! I tried a frying pan on it to see the stability of the hole setup. I think I'll be safe using my small one with eggs in it :p

Christmas was good to me! Got a Jetboil Sumo and a Steripen Sidewinder water purifier. My sister got us a mix of little items as well, so we're looking pretty good so far once the spring arrives. Even got our dog his own backpack, so he can haul some of his basic gear (water bottles/food/bowl) on his own. Very exited to get out for the first time. Will have to test the gear and such in the back yard before to ensure I know what the heck to do with everything. Thanks again to those on here who've recommended items and pm'd about some stuff.

Eventually will have pictures to show of the first attempt.

I'm so excited... my wife got me a 9 tier Excalibur food dehydrator for Christmas :) Can't wait to make some jerky and have a whole new world of tasty backpacking foods available.

What's a decent stove a novice should be looking into? Is there anything special it should have? I've seen most seem to be dual burner.
Coleman seemed to offer a few options and Martin. A couple were also like mini bbq styles, but they seemed a bit large to bring around.

Alky stoves aren't really meant to have controlled flames. They're really meant for water boiling.

That said, Mini Bull Designs has an adjustable alky stove (or they used to).

Personally, alcohol has little appeal until you're looking at week+ long trips and only eating boil meals.

Hard to beat a standard 2 burner Coleman or similar stove.

I had one with a single burner and the second burner was a grill pan. It wasn't the best idea ever.
