To Remote Start or not, that is the question.

Saturday question for me is to drop some $$ on a remote start in my 2006 Tacoma or not.

I had a DEI brand two-way in my 04 Tundra and loved it. Up until recently I could care, but had one installed in my mom's honda last weekend and it got me thinking.
Plus, I'm back at work going in for 6am and only drive about 5 miles. The truck never warms up .
Plus I've noticed more condensation residue in the inside of my oil cap.
Is this related?
Will the starter help or hurt it with this short drive?
I know about the no puffing/idle issue, but honestly, it gets friggin cold here and now with the drive the engine temp barely reaches 175 on the scangauge.
I guess I could just go out and start the darn thing myself, but I have the $$ & it would be a reputable install. aH decisions.
Pros and cons please?

 

I got a viper installed about 3 weeks ago. I also get up @ 5 in the morning and its works out great.

The only con is that I turned the truck on by accicdent when the remote was in my pocket but I took it back and they reprogramed the remote so now I have to press it twice in order to start. problem solved.

 

I just put a Compustar 2-way in my '09. To me, it is worth it all day. Start the truck from inside, mine tells me the temp in the truck as well. I like the 2-way's to let me know if the last command worked. ie did the truck start? Are my doors locked etc.
It also came with good range. I like it and recommend one to people who live in cold or hot areas.

 

I got a compustar auto start and its alright..

I really wanna get the new viper one where i can start it with my iphone!

 

What don't you like about your Compustar? I think mine is fantastic. More reliable than my wifes Viper. She has problems starting at long distances. I was in my buddys's apartment on the 3rd floor. The truck was across the street in a curch parking lot. Which is across the street and across the apartment complex's lot. Now that is range.

Thanks Chris I didn't think it was a good thing and was pondering getting up even earlier to drive a little farther until at least up to temp. Or move to warmer climate!

I don't want a bad CAT either more reason for the remote start (ok I am justifying now)

ive just had some problems, like my remote saying the truck started but it didnt.. standing right next to the truck and the truck not starting or even unlocking.. so a few problems like that..

ive used prestiege and viper i think these are the only 2 brands that i like go with viper it goes long ways and its very reputable!!! Good luck ...

 

What is the said temp that an engine needs to get up to? I live in Austin Tx where the temp rarely gets to freezing. Is this sort of thing an issue for a Tacoma owner such as myself?

THat sucks, I hope mine doesn't start doing that. Works fantastic now. BTW, just for kicks, you should see if the connections are soldered or tap. Could be a loose connection.

 

My scangauge reads my engine temp around 182-187 degrees all the time when its at the half way mark which I have read here is normal op. I've watched the scangauge at a cold start & the needle starts moving at up off its resting post around 125 degrees.

Sometimes when I get in the truck on the chilly days (when its around 32 degree F), the scangauge reads 35 degrees. I can't remember last winter what it displays on the bitter cold days. When its summer time, its much higher close to 75 degrees at start up. Don't know if this helps, somebody else can chime in.

 

Better yet, get an alarm/starter combo and protect your truck too and probably get an insurance discount if you have the starter kill installed with the alarm!!

 

Sigh...remote starter. That would be nice in the 5 degree mornings at 5:30AM
The only drawback of a manual transmission IMO.
I know a guy that could wire one up to bypass the clutch but that wouldn't be exactly following the rules
My wife has a stock Honda one on her CR-V and it works great. We had one of the generic ones from Best Buy installed on her previous Montero Sport and I liked that one better.

 

I just got one, and I love it. It also has a remote temperature readout so I can see if I really need to remote start it up or not. Viper 5902 - couldn't be happier.

 

There are lots of reliable starts to work with manuals with safety systems. DEI has a module for it too. If you like PM me and I will see if I can find a shop for you in your area.
