Dreaded "thump/clunk"

I had the dreaded thump when stopping or just after I had let off the brakes. Felt like the tranny had dropped and my gear shift (auto) would move around alot. I crawled under the truck and lubed the slip yoke and u-joints. Clunk GONE! It was driving me nuts!!

You should have seen the crap that came out of the joints/yoke as the new lube pushed out the old stuff.

I hope this is not a band aide fix for another problem so I am gunna keep my eye on it. But, it's gone for now!!

 

you did the right thing......as they were probably about dry as hell. just keep an eye on everything, but i dont think you should have a problem now.

 

But if it does come back after some time, it may also be the dreaded axle wrap that Tacos are notorious for.

I refuse to refer to my truck as Mexican fast food ............sounds like the dreaded axlewrap as stated above...will more likely occur whenever you come to an abrupt stop.

 

I agree, I think calling a Tacoma a "taco" is really lame. It gives the truck a bad rap. First time I heard it I thought about the truck offroading and somehow folding in half becuase it coulden't take the terrain.
Stop abusing the Tacoma! Thats like calling your children bastards or red headed step children. Bad carma!

 

I am going to look for the axle wrap also (I hope I can get some a autozone J/K ). I have put my tacoma through it's paces and so far so good even on hard abrupt stops. If it starts again I will update. Thanks

 

Don't sweat the bump / clunk deal. Most (if not all) the first gens do it at some point. I thought my tranny was screwed up at first. It felt like it wasn't kicking back down into first gear until after I let my foot off the brake at a stop light, then I feel the "bump". Oh well.

 

The thump/clunk finally got to me (along with a worn out CSB) so I replaced the factory two piece set up with a one pice set up. Only cost me $325 installed. Best money I have ever spent.

Tom Wood's Custom Drive Shafts sell the one piece shafts everyday for that reason and also to eliminate unwanted vibrabtions. I found my local for less because they reused my double CV and slip yoke.

 

my truck has the same problem, i just had not time to work on it yet.

 

short of the lack of maintainence...

Axle wrap causes the thunk...
New heavier duty spring paks help a bunch
Or a traction bar designed for full travel... ie... Blue Devil and the likes... is another route

Vibration is caused most normally from bad pinion angle/alignment... more noticeable after lifting...
*Discounting bent things and poor tire balance

I have never needed a one peice driveshaft to find harmony...

Suspension Lifts under 3" shouldn't really be an issue... but if it is... 3* and lesser degree shims (based on pinion angle) can be placed between the spring and axle to dial that in a little closer... and most likely take care of those vibration issues... and may even help with the venerable clunk on the DS slip joint

I have about 2 1/2" suspension lift in the rear...
My Deaver leaf paks eliminated that clunk... which I had with the pos oem leafs...

It will vary depending on actual lift of course...

measuring the pinion angle will net which shim is correct for each individual circumstance...

 

Well, as the grease I used on the slip yoke slowly comes out the clunk is returning. I ordered a new CSB and will install it in the next few days. Will report back on the status.

 

Ok my first question what is a CSB? May be a dumb question but im lost

mine does the samething but it seems like about every 2,000 miles after i have filled the yoke with grease it comes back.

O well guess i can deal with crawling under it every now and then lol
